Although nowhere near as big as the landslide that ended hopes of a Super WalMart in Kilbuck Township a few years ago, the crumbling hillside along Route 65 in the same vicinity has once again closed the highway to traffic.

Relatively minor levels of rocks and mud came onto the northbound lanes in Glenfield on Wednesday, about a quarter mile north of the I-79 interchange. PennDOT officials closed all four lanes of traffic to clear the area and assess the danger, but southbound lanes were reopened to traffic later that day.

Route 65 ramp closing

The ramp currently being used as the temporary off-ramp from northbound Route 65 (Ohio River Boulevard) to the Glenfield Viaduct/Kilbuck Street/I-79 in Glenfield Borough will be closed beginning Friday, July 23, weather permitting.

The ramp closure will occur from 7 a.m. on Friday through Oct. 1. The closure is necessary as crews begin slope repairs.

Traffic study requested

At the request of borough residents, Emsworth Council has agreed to ask the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) to do a traffic study to determine if left turns from Locust Street onto Ohio River Boulevard are feasible.

Council member Paul Getz reported at Wednesday's council meeting that residents of several streets in the vicinity of the borough hall are effectively "trapped" due to one-way streets and other restrictions that keep them from reaching the southbound lanes of Route 65 with any ease.

Road repairs begin

Motorists should expect traffic restrictions on two state roads in the area.

Slope and shoulder stabilization work is being conducted on Toms Run Road in Kilbuck Township. The road will be reduced to one lane of traffic between Duff Road and Route 65 as necessary between 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. on weekdays.

The work is expected to continue through late April.

Route 65 in Glenfield, in the area of the I-79 interchange, will see traffic restrictions and crossover pattern changes as the first phase of work begins Monday to improve the interchange.
