The ‘Lopes entered the final week of the regular season in control of their own destiny, as far as playoff dreams are concerned. With three games remaining, each contest would be crucial to take, and every player knew that winning-out ensured a spot in the WPIAL playoffs, from which the team has been one year removed. Losing more than once would close the season on a team that had enjoyed so many moments of promise.

Anyone who grew up listening to the music of the Wee Jams probably calls one of the North Boroughs communities home.

It's been close to 50 years since the group formed, and as much as the world has changed, there have been a few constants, the sound of the band among them. The close harmony, the heavy bass, the soaring falsettos, the blue-eyed soul harkens to another era --pre-British music invasion, pre-heavy metal, pre-rap. Could it really survive nearly half a century?

The Avonworth Football Boosters are asking the district's school board to reconsider its ban on away game jerseys that bear each player's name, or cough up the $2,600 the boosters spent to buy the nameplates.

Editor:

What I would like to know is why the Avonworth School Board discusses an issue such as name plates on jerseys for multiple meetings.

From what I read in the paper, the football boosters raise money and were going to pay for the name plates, which would be given to seniors each year. With that said and the football program not going to use school budget funds or taxpayers' money, what's the big deal? As a former football player, to receive your name plate your senior year would be a nice gesture.

A determined group of parents spoke their position about jersey name-tags at the Avonworth School Board meeting on June 7.

Al Cuteri, representing the board's athletic committee, stated that the committee wishes to discontinue name plates on football jerseys. A booster committee of parents and players disagree. Their desire is to continue this practice that began last year when a decision was made by the athletic director, independent of the athletic committee.

The Northgate Flames continued their icy skid this week, dropping two section games with losses to Seton LaSalle and Carlynton. Northgate lost to the Carylnton Cougars 61-58 on Tuesday, increasing the winless streak to 12 games. Head coach Perry Harrop said that although the Flames cut down on the number of turnovers and were shooting the ball well offensively, the difference-maker in the game was the number of three-pointers made by both sides. He said Carlynton hit 10 threes, while Northgate dropped only six.
