An interstate drug trafficking ring based in Ohio Township was closed down last week when a state grand jury returned indictments against 12 men.

The investigation by the state Attorney General’s Bureau of Narcotics Investigation was called “Operation Infamous Choppers” after the Camp Horne Road, Ohio Township business that served as the base for a drug ring that officials say brought some $2 million worth of marijuana from Mexico, by way of Arizona, to Western Pennsylvania.

Joe’s Rusty Nail owner Joe Elbicki celebrated the Bellevue restaurant’s 30th anniversary on Aug. 13. Employees presented him with a plaque recognizing the accomplishment and his contribution to the local community. They also put together a slide show that featured 30 years worth of photos and such memorabilia as old menus, all set to music. While Elbicki credits the restaurant’s employees with his success, they maintain that he has set the example by setting a standard for quality food and excellent customer service.

Bellevue has become the first of three local municipalities to adopt a joint zoning code, paving the way for the state’s first successful implementation of a multi-jurisdictional zoning effort.

Adoption of the code, which grew from the completion of a joint comprehensive plan, is in its final stages, with Avalon and Ben Avon borough councils slated to take action later this month on the code already approved by Allegheny County.

Robert Harkins Robert G. Harkins, 58, of South Park, died Wednesday, July 1, 2009.

Mr. Harkins was a systems analyst at the Information Security Group of UPMC Churchill Center. He was a graduate of North Hills High School and received a bachelor of science degree in chmistry from Duquesne University, and a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. He was an avid supporter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society and the American Diabetes Association through cycling.
