Was there ever a spring more anticipated than this one? It's been a long, cold, overly-snowy winter and we're all feeling a new sense of energy as the temperatures climb, the daylight lasts a little longer, and flowers and buds begin appearing.

Many of us turn that energy towards our homes in the spring and summer. We've spent the winter planning and making lists of what needs to be updated, repaired, renewed.

At Tuesday's meeting, Ben Avon Council member Rob Galbraith followed up on an agenda item from July's meeting. Last month, Galbraith reminded council that in January, council had received a package from the county requesting to do an energy audit in the borough, and that by signing the paperwork, council agreed to comply with the findings. The result of the audit was a recommendation to change 79 light bulbs in the borough building from regular and fluorescent to the energy-saving kind, and to install a programmable thermostat.

Hard to think of serving as a crossing guard in such lofty terms, but just ask Herb and you'll get an answer that expresses his love for the people he greets and guards every morning and afternoon at the intersection of Oxford and New Brighton Road in Ben Avon Heights.

Energy efficiency and help with grant applications are expected to result from Emsworth Borough participating in the Allegheny County Energy Program.

Council member Paul Getz reported at Wednesday's council meeting that experts would review energy use at borough facilities and make recommendations for how both energy and money could be saved. They then would advise officials on what grants might be available. Getz said that he hoped Emsworth could obtain a grant to retrofit the heating system in the borough building.

Imagine, if you can, not getting a gas bill in the winter that reaches triple figures. Imagine a summer without sky-high electric bills.

Imagine if your home actually generated as much energy as it consumed.

Experts say that the technology exists to do just that. The challenge is building a home that is affordable and esthetically pleasing at the same time.

The next challenge is doing it in a place that does not have a lot of sun, but does have very cold winters and very hot summers.

Bond refinanced

Refinancing Ohio Township's current bond will produce about $87,000 for capital projects.

Sullivan Jr. said that favorable interest rates had allowed refinancing with no extension of the amount or term of the bond. Instead the township will receive $87,000 as a refund or reimbursement for capital projects, he said.
