Ben Avon Council has approved a garbage collection contract with Waste Management that will be effective from 2012 to 2016.

The new contract will include an e-waste option. Borough secretary Carmella Hallstein told council Tuesday that Waste Management made two proposals to the borough -- one an extension of the existing contract, and the other adding an e-waste option to the contract.

Some 44 bags of suspected heroin, along with marijuana, paraphernalia and stolen electronics, were recovered when the Avalon Police entered a room at the Avalon Motel on Jan. 5.

Police say they were dispatched to the motel to check on the welfare of William Clokey, 20, of Ohio River Boulevard, Avalon. They found him in a room with a woman later identified as Jaclyn Handlow, 20, of Roosevelt Road, 15237.

Officers also found the heroin, marijuana and a bag containing two spoons and three syringes, as well as two laptop computers and gaming systems determined to have been stolen.

Christmas dinner came to Bellevue a little early for Kim Roney and her sons.

And Santa came almost two weeks ahead of schedule, with presents exchanged on Dec. 13.

But the family was not rushing the season. They were just fitting everything in before Josh, 24, and Mark, 22 had to report back to their ships, Josh to the USS George Washington in Yokosuka, Japan, and Mark to the USS Enterprise in Norfolk, VA.

The family last spent time together in August, 2008, just before Josh deployed to Japan.

A resident of Meade Avenue reported that two purses and a vehicle had been stolen during a burglary at the home on Oct. 10.

A Cliff Avenue resident reported an attempted burglary the same day.

A vehicle on Kendall Avenue was reported broken into on Oct. 7. Money and electronics were reported stolen.

The door to a home on South Harrison was reported vandalized on Oct. 11.

Ian McGee, 33, of Orchard Avenue, faces charges of simple assault and obstructing justice at the scene of a vehicle crash on Ohio River Boulevard on Oct. 6.
