A homeless woman was charged with burglary and taken to jail after she reportedly broke into a vacant Spruce Run apartment on Aug. 31. Police called to the apartment found Tiffany Clark, 20, and two small children sleeping on a mattress on the floor. There was no running water or other utilities available in the apartment, police say. The children were turned over to Allegheny County CYF.

An Avalon woman reported being robbed in the alley behind her Center Avenue home on July 16. The woman told police that she was walking down the alley towards North Ohio Street when a white male walked past her, then turned around and came back. he pushed her to the ground and took her purse, police say.

A traffic stop on California Avenue on July 10 led to charges being filed against an Avalon man. Police say they found a used syringe beneath the floor mat on the driver’s side of the car. Eric Stemmerick, 27, of Virginia Avenue, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

Two people were cited for disorderly conduct after a reported domestic dispute on Ohio River Boulevard on July 10.

The driver of a vehicle hit by a tractor trailer was taken by ambulance to Allegheny General Hospital on June 29.

Police say the woman’s car was forced into a spin, and then into oncoming traffic, when the large commercial vehicle attempted to change lanes.

One vehicle was towed from an accident at Florence and South Chestnut avenues on June 28.

Police received a complaint June 25 from a woman who said that a friend to whom she had given a ride stole two bottles of prescription medication, cash and a dozen DVDs from her vehicle.

Avalon Police were called on June 20 after a driver reportedly fell asleep at the wheel on Union Avenue and his car ended up on its roof in a yard. Police say the driver was not injured.

Officers also responded to a suspected heroin overdose on Fisk Avenue on June 21. The man had already died before police arrived.

A burglary in the 600 block of Forest Avenue was reported May 7. The resident reported several items stolen.

A laptop computer and PS3 machine were reported stolen during a burglary at a home in the 400 block of Dawson Avenue on May 3.

The man believed to have stolen a wallet from an Avalon Library employee was quickly apprehended on May 2. Items from the wallet taken from a purse at the library were found scattered along Jackman Avenue, although the victim’s driver’s license and bank card were missing. The victim checked her bank account on-line and found a transaction that was found to have occurred at the East Coast bar at the Avalon Motel. Officers investigating at the bar noticed a man fitting the description of the suspect seen in the library, and recovered the missing driver’s license and bank card from him.

The Quaker Valley Council of Governments and its member municipalities of Aleppo, Avalon, Bell Acres, Bellevue, Ben Avon, Edgeworth, Emsworth, Glenfield, Haysville, Kilbuck, Leet, Leetsdale, Glen Osborne and Sewickley will sponsor a Recycling Day on Saturday, May 7, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Sewickley Borough will host the event behind the Sewickley municipal building on Washington Street. Only residents from the above mentioned municipalities will be able to participate, and ID (driver’s license or voter registration) will be required. No commercial establishments may participate.

Ohio Township Police are continuing to investigate the possible attempted luring of a young teenage girl in Ben Avon Monday afternoon.

Police say that the 13-year-old was walking on Terrace Avenue, above Dickson Avenue, during the heavy rains about 4 p.m. A balding white male driving a four-door maroon colored car yelled at the girl to get into his car. He then drove around the block and returned to Terrace, where he again told the girl to get into the car. She continued walking and the man drove off.

The driver is described as having a red or brown mustache and beard.

Avalon Police are continuing to investigate a pursuit Tuesday night that ended when a vehicle crashed into a pole in Ben Avon.

Police say that an officer attempted to pull over a speeding vehicle on Route 65 in Avalon, near the Ben Avon border. The driver refused to stop until his vehicle hit a utility pole a couple blocks later. Police say the driver had a DUI-related suspended license and is suspected of being intoxicated. He refused a blood test after he was taken to the hospital, police say.

Bellevue Police are calling a drive-by shooting that occurred on Lincoln Avenue Tuesday afternoon a "transient event" not substantially connected to the borough.

The victim of the shooting at this point appears to be a gray Oldsmobile, as both young men in the car fled the scene on foot and have not yet been located.

An Avalon man was the victim of an attempted theft by extortion, when unknown men tried to get him to send $2,500 to Madrid, Spain, claiming that his grandson had been in an accident.

Avalon Police were contacted Nov. 10 by the victim’s granddaughter, who said the first call seeking money had come in the day before. A second call by another man delivered instructions on where to send the money. No money was sent, police say, after relatives realized that the victim’s grandson was not in an accident in Spain.

A pizza delivery driver reported Sept. 30 that someone had attempted to rob him on Teece Avenue about 10:30 p.m.

Two attempted burglaries were reported: Someone tried to break into a home on Dunbar Avenue on Sept. 30, and into an apartment on Grant Avenue on Sept. 28.

Three people ended up under arrest on serious charges after a chance meeting with Avalon Police on Sept. 14.

An Avalon Police officer leaving a Route 65 restaurant observed what appeared to be a disabled vehicle on the highway, with another car behind it and a third vehicle stopped in the opposite lane of traffic. Police say that a man standing at the window of the disabled vehicle handed something to the driver of the third vehicle, which then drove off towards Bellevue.

It could have been much worse, but the combination of an effective emergency response plan and what can only be called acts of God prevented an environmental nightmare when a tanker truck carrying a toxic chemical overturned on Union Avenue Wednesday afternoon.

The tanker was traveling down Union Avenue toward the North Boroughs about 3 p.m. when the driver attempted to turn onto the I-279 southbound on-ramp. Officials believe several tires hit a rut beside the ramp, the driver overcompensated, and the tanker flipped.

Avalon Police are investigating the burglary of a Taylor Avenue apartment reported July 19.

A flat screen television was reported stolen, police say.

The windshield and a side window were smashed in a vehicle parked on McKinley Avenue on Jul;y 21.

The driver of a tractor-trailer truck that hit a utility pole at California and North Home avenues was stopped on Route 65 after he left the scene of the accident on July 16. Traffic controls on the pole were damaged.

An Avalon man stopped for having the music in his car too loud ended up cited for disorderly conduct on June 27. Police say that Bruce Brown Jr., 20, of Clive Street, became hostile and shouted profanities at officers and passing motorists.

A driver whose vehicle malfunctioned ended up hitting a street sign on Jackman Avenue on July 1, then her vehicle continued along the sidewalk, hitting three parked cars. No injuries were reported.

Thomas Ochaba, 18, of California Avenue, was charged with underage drinking at Anthony’s on Ohio River Boulevard on June 25.

Editor: I don't often take a bus, but several years ago had to do so. I barely had time to sit down, when the driver abruptly started, then slammed on his brakes, allowing a breathless latecomer to board. The driver yelled at him, "If it weren't for you people, I might be on time!" I laughed and said to my companion, "It's just like it was in nursing. If it weren't for the patients we could get our work done. I always thought it was a joke!"

A drug bust ended badly in Avalon last Thursday night, with a suspect attempting to run over a police officer and the officer shooting at the vehicle.

Avalon police Chief Tom Kokoski said that officers Walt Johnson and Matt McDanel were working in plainclothes, observing a drug deal occurring in Peach Alley. When the officers approached the car, Kokoski said, identifying themselves as police officers, the driver took off, headed right for Johnson. The chief said that Johnson fired three shots in self defense but did not hit the vehicle.

Lutheran Service Society PrimeTime Center will distribute Farmer's Market Nutrition Vouchers at the Knights of Columbus building in Bellevue on Tuesday, June 29.

Recipients must be at leasst 60 years of age and an Allegheny county resident. Proof of age and residency will be re-quired. Documentation can include a valid driver's license or photo I.D.

The distribution hours are 9:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. Parking is limited, but the facility is handicapped-accessible.

A quick trip to the store became more of a ride than expected by a young Ben Avon man, whose vehicle flipped over after hitting the hillside along Perrysville Avenue in Ben Avon, near the entrance to Avon Park. Driver Mark Keyser told police that he lost control in the heavy rain gushing down the street Saturday afternoon. Elizabeth Avenue in Avalon is expected to open temporarily to traffic this weekend, and then permanently by the middle of next week. Weather permitting, the contractor planned to lay the binder course on Friday, and then pave the street early next week. Elizabeth Avenue had to be reconstructed from the Jackman Avenue intersection to Ohio River Boulevard. The street was undermined by thousands of gallons of water that gushed from a water pipe that was crushed when a tractor-trailer driver attempted to turn the corner onto Jackman and got hung up on a fire hydrant.
