With the 2011 football season about to get underway, new Avonworth head coach Duke Johncour seems optimistic about taking over a program that has done a complete turnaround over the last several years.

Gone is former head coach Jason Kekseo, who compiled a 31-6 record over the last three seasons that included two conference titles and two appearances in the WPIAL semis.

"The program was established and that's a good thing," said Johncour.

"I'm coming into a very good situation. The kids are working hard, but we have a lot of holes to fill," he added.

A plot of ground a little under one-third of an acre located at the eastern end of Bellevue may not qualify as urban gardening, but planted carefully, a garden that size will yield an abundance of produce for the North Hills Community Outreach [NHCO] food pantries.

It's not the first time that this mini-farm has been cultivated. Terrie Amelio, whose family gardened the Davis Avenue property many years ago, donated the land to NHCO, requesting that the land be used as an organic garden and that the produce support NHCO's food pantries in Bellevue and Hampton.

North Hills Community Outreach is requesting donations of rice mixes, canned fruit, crackers, macaroni and cheese and soup.

NHCO operates two food pantries, in Hampton and Bellevue, serving 350 families in need every month.

According to food pantry coordinator Brandi Rukovena, “Summer is typically a slow time of the year for food donations. Most groups that donate – schools, church groups, scouts – aren’t meeting, and individual donors are away or busy. But the need is constant.”

Someone once said that familiarity breeds contempt. Well, in the case of Avonworth athletics, familiarity seems to breed winning seasons and playoff runs, and hopes are high the practice will be as successful for the boys’ basketball team as it was for the football program.

Avonworth School District administrators were flooded with some 90 resumes after posting a job opening for an athletic director. That number first was cut down to 15, then down to three. Eventually there was only one candidate for the job.

The school board unanimously voted to hire Earl Chet Fuhrman as athletic director, replacing Greg Wagner, who resigned July 31.

“We were really impressed with his motivation, his exuberance for the job,” superintendent Dr. Valerie McDonald said at the board’s work session on Monday.
