Most of the North Boroughs are looking for animal control services this year, and officials are not too happy with their options.

Over the past few years, the municipalities have moved from contracts with Triangle Pet, which kills animals after the legal holding period has expired, to agreements with Lois Cummins of Spencer and Friends, who does not. Cummins is certified as an animal control officer.

Recently, however, Cummins notified many municipalities that she no longer would provide animal control services.

The Northgate School District maintenance crew will be getting a new tractor.

At Monday night's school board meeting, the purchase of a New Holland Tractor Model 1030 was approved. This tractor features four wheel drive, turf tires, mower, grass catcher, front loader, backhoe and snow blade. It will be purchased through the state bid list for $22,311.

If you wanted to see a perfect example of the expression “it ain't over ‘til it’s over” played out, you should have been at the Avonworth softball team's WPIAL first round game against Bentworth on Tuesday, May 18.

The Lady ‘Lopes, who trailed by nine runs going into the final inning in regulation, managed to tie the game, but then fell in extra innings 14-13.

"I've never seen anything like that before,” said head coach Chris Knox. “These kids played a good game, showed a lot of passion, and you can't give any more than that."

Since returning from their spring training event in Florida a week earlier, the Avonworth softball team overcame some injuriesand opened section play with a win at home this past Tuesday.

Behind a one-hitter pitched by Julianne Hirsch and an offense that was led by catcher Marissa Milbert's four RBIs, the Lady ‘Lopes put away OLSH in five innings, blanking the Chargers 12-0.

Although the Avonworth baseball team lost its first two games -- nonsection contests against AA teams -- it’s too early to tell how well the season will go for the young team.

Last year Avonworth lost a handful of games at the start of the season, but turned things around and went 10-0 and undefeated in the section to win the 4A championship.
