An Avonworth athlete has been named second team all-state for his performance in the fall.

Senior running back Jimmy Zubik was named to the second team all-state football team.

Two senior Avon-worth athletes shared the spotlight in an Oct. 2 assembly when KDKA awarded Molly Frew the "Extra Effort Award," and ESPN Radio 1250 named Jimmy Zubik “Athlete of the Week.”

Introducing Molly, KDKA news personality Bob Pompeani said that Molly "…exemplifies all that can be expected from a star athlete."

Basketball coach Bob Schulz described Molly as "…an outstanding athlete with a tremendous work ethic," adding, "…and she's always smiling!"

In addition to basketball, Molly runs cross country and plays softball.

The award included a $200 check for the school.

A Northgate/Avonworth track team athlete placed in the top 10 for the 100 meter dash last weekend at the state championships.

Khiry Watts placed seventh in the AAA in the PIAA State Track and Field Championships, held at Shippensburg University.

On May 22, Watts placed in the top 16, qualifing him for the semifinals that were held on May 23. He the finished in the top eight in the semifinals to move on to the finals, which were held later that afternoon.
