Avonworth Elementary School will have an assistant principal beginning in January, and one of the district's own will be taking the new position.

The school board voted unanimously at its Dec. 7 meeting to hire Scott Miller, a sixth grade math teacher at Avonworth.

Miller is in his fifth year as a teacher at Avonworth after graduating from Robert Morris University in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in instructional leadership. He expects to complete the principal certification program at Gannon University this spring.

Avonworth Elementary School could have an assistant principal beginning with the second semester of this school year.

The school board is expected to vote next Monday to hire someone for the job. Whoever fills the position will assist principal Dr. Darlene Tartaglione with various duties at the school including attendance and students issues and school schedules. The assistant will be paid an annual salary of $62,000 plus benefits.

Northgate personnel The Northgate School Board made two personnel decisions at its regular meeting on Monday.

The board ratified the hiring of Brittany Armstrong as a part-time special education teacher assistant.

Brandon Hogle was hired as a full-time secondary social studies teacher at the middle/high school. He replaces Kevin McKiernan, who accepted a position as assistant principal in the West Allegheny School District.

Board member David Natale was absent.

The Avonworth School District may hire an assistant principal for the elementary school.

Personnel committee chair Brenda Barlek told school board members at their work session on Tuesday that the district needs to look into hiring an assistant, preferably this year.

Superintendent Dr. Valerie McDonald said that consultant John Esaias currently is helping elementary school principal Dr. Darlene Tartaglione.
