Progress continues on the construction of a primary center near Avonworth Elementary. The district’s school board voted Monday to begin negotiations for pre-construction services, approved several documents required by the state, and heard an update from the project architect/engineer.

The process to begin construction of Avonworth's proposed primary center continued to move forward at the school board's meeting on Monday. The board unanimously approved a resolution to hold a public meeting on the project on Aug. 4, at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium.

The public hearing is required by state law.

Experts are telling the Avonworth School Board to act now to secure financing for the the construction of an $18 million primary center.

What began as an attempt to take advantage of lower interest rates to refinance two current bond issues has blossomed to include the nearly $16 million Avonworth still needs to build the new school.

Bellevue will apply for a grant to develop a "streetscape" design for the Lincoln Avenue business district.

Jack Williams, a Bellevue resident and architect who is working with the Allegheny Together program, told Bellevue Council at its meeting on June 23 that the design would address issues such as sidewalks, lighting, furniture, etc. This "master plan" is required before the borough can apply for any other grants to fund business district projects, he said.

Council unanimously approved the application for a $50,000 grant.

An architect has been hired to begin the process of creating an additional Avonworth Elementary School Building.

The district's school board voted Monday to have HHSDR Architects and Engineers head the project that could put a new building in place in time for students to start the 2013-14 school year.

Faced with overcrowding that has forced the fifth grade into modular classrooms outside the elementary school on Roosevelt Road, the district now anticipates constructing a new building that will house grades K-2, while the current school continues to house students in grades 3-5.

A $1.2 million renovation project for the borough building was approved unanimously by Bellevue Council at its regular meeting on May 5.

Jeff Foreman, an architect from the Eckles Group, which designed the building renovations, was present at the meeting and said that he had received the bids for the work to be done on the building.

According to director of administrative services Connie Flasher, the project includes renovating the administrative office area, making the building handicapped accessible, replacing the flooring in the building, and electrical, heating and cooling work.

With Avonworth High School’s unused metal shop equipment on its way out, the school board has authorized a contract with an architect to reconfigure the empty space.

The district will enter into a contract with Timothy Morgan to redesign the area. He will be paid $9,800.

Although the motion was approved unanimously, some board members voiced concerns. Board members Lynn Evans McGrath and Marybeth Sommers agreed that it seemed that the board had rushed the decisions to get rid of the shop equipment and redesign the room.
