The Avonworth School District will be adding a new position. At a special meeting on Monday, the school board unanimously voted to create a new kindergarten instructional aide position beginning with the upcoming school year.

Board members Jeffrey Schmid, Lynn Evans, Patrick Stewart and Peter McKay were absent from the meeting.

Several personnel changes will be taking place in the Avonworth School District.

On June 6, the Avonworth School Board approved Elizabeth Maidman as a day-to-day substitute for the 2011-12 school year at the rate of $140 per day with no benefits.

The board also approved Nick Mancini as a temporary high school learning support (social studies) teacher, and Molly Chester as a temporary high school social studies teacher, both with benefits.

Susan Byrne was approved as a personal care aide for the upcoming school year.

The Avonworth School District will eliminate 15 aide positions in the next school year, the first step in budget cuts that could encompass an end to full-day kindergarten, salary freezes, and a request for voluntary concessions from union employees.

The Avonworth School Board considered several motions regarding personnel at its meeting on Tuesday.

The board approved Jane Ross Tomko as a substitute instructional aide.

Tracey Hannan and Ashley Smith, currently day-to-day substitutes, were approved as long term substitutes for the district. Hannan will be mentored by teacher Jeff Boggess, while Smith will be mentored by teacher Natalie Barkovich.

The board accepted the resignation of Stephen Strasser, the school psychologist/coordinator of student services for the past 35 years. Strasser will retire on June 30, 2011.

Several personnel-related decisions were made by the Avonworth School Board at its April 12 meeting.

Rebecca Kolesar's position as a long-term substitute elementary teacher was approved for the 2010-11 school year. Marnie Arnold was approved as her mentor.

A Family and Medical Leave Act request for Kathryn Ursta, an Avonworth Middle School teacher ,was granted for May 28-June 4.

The board accepted the resignation of middle school instructional aide Joel Tufts effective March 30.

Among the personnel decisions made by the Northgate School Board meeting Monday:

Matthew Haupt was approved as an instructor aide and David Haupt as a lifeguard for the Community Swim Program for the remainder of the 2009-10 school year.

The board accepted Lynn Mialki's retirement resignation as a secretary at Avalon Elementary, effective Sept. 17.

Beattie project expanded

The A.W. Beattie Career Center board has decided how to spend the last of the excess bond funds.

Approximately $3 million in bond funds were left over when bids for the renovation project came in under what was projected. The board already had decided how to spend $2 million of that money, with about $1 million going towards paying down the debt created by the bond, and another $1 million going towards more energy efficient repairs.
