Avalon Police arrested their second drunk bicyclist in as many weeks after coming across a man on Jackman Avenue, tangled in his bicycle, on Sept. 3. David Lorenzo, 53, of Jefferson Avenue, Bellevue, was charged with driving under the influence.

Police were able to find and arrest a man who confessed to stealing construction materials from beneath the Birmingham Avenue bridge when a witness got the license number of the truck used in the theft. Police say that James Rickard, 36, of Washington Avenue, Bellevue, had stolen tools and materials valued at $1,500 on Sept. 2.

Joseph Barshowski Joseph Barshowski of Pittsburgh, husband of the late Mary Ann Barshowski, died Saturday, July 30, 2011. He is survived by his brother, David Barshowski and his wide Orysia; a nephew, Donald; and a niece, Nancy. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Eva; and five siblings, Michael, Stephania, Alexander, Frank and John. Friends were received at Thomas P. Kunsak Funeral Home, North Side. The Quaker Valley Council of Governments and its member municipalities of Aleppo, Avalon, Bell Acres, Bellevue, Ben Avon, Edgeworth, Emsworth, Glenfield, Haysville, Kilbuck, Leet, Leetsdale, Glen Osborne and Sewickley will sponsor a Recycling Day on Saturday, May 7, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Sewickley Borough will host the event behind the Sewickley municipal building on Washington Street. Only residents from the above mentioned municipalities will be able to participate, and ID (driver’s license or voter registration) will be required. No commercial establishments may participate.

A Westmoreland County man decided to avoid arrest in Emsworth Tuesday by running from police, and was later taken into custody in Haysville.

Police say that John Domenic Bracken, 22, from Greensburg, fled from the scene of a traffic stop on Greenwood Avenue and Washington Way. He was found by Sewickley Police a short time later running along the railroad tracks. Bracken has been charged with providing false identification to law enforcement, resisting arrest, escape, and prohibited acts.

Betty Jane Titler Betty Jane Sharpnack Stevenson Titler, 86, of Avalon, formerly of Brownsville and Youngstown and wife of the late Eugene Stevenson and Guy Titler, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2010. Mrs. Titler was a registered nurse, taking care of veterans of World War II. She then worked in Ohio and at Bellevue Suburban General Hospital in the neonatal unit. She enjoyed reading, playing the slot machines and watching soap operas.

Louise Griffith Louise Rose Conte Griffith, 83, of Newton, MA, formerly of Monongahela and wife of the late Blair A. Griffith, died Friday, Sept. 24, 2010. Mrs. Griffith was a 1945 graduate of Monongahela High School and a 1949 graduate of Penn State University with a degree in journalism. She worked at West Penn Power in the public relations department, then taught for 20 years in the Franklin Regional School District. She enjoyed politics, sports, reading and crossword puzzles.

Two robberies -- including the armed robbery of a clerk at a Bellevue business -- as well as a number of burglaries were among incidents investigated recently by the Bellevue Police Department.

A white male armed with a handgun is reported to have robbed the Bellevue Beer distributor on Ohio River Boulevard on Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. The robber was wearing a blue hoodie and carrying a black bag. Allegheny County Police were asked to assist in the investigation.

Also on Aug. 28, a man came to the police station to report that he had been robbed by someone he knew.

A Bellevue man was scheduled for a preliminary hearing yesterday after being arrested in connection with a shooting in Wilkinsburg.

David Hickman, 50, of Washington Avenue, was taken into custody June 12 by Bellevue Police. He was being held in the Allegheny County Jail on a $50,000 bond after being charged with aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person and terroristic threats.

Nine people were arrested for driving under the influence during a DUI checkpoint conducted by the West Hills DUI Task Force on Ohio River Boulevard at Atlantic Avenue in Emsworth on Sept. 19.

Mrs. Freed was a member of the Eastern Star for 50 years. She is survived by three children, Donald K. McClelland, Sharon L. Freed and Patricia E. Fasciano and her husband David; her grandson, Marc McClelland; her sister-in-law, Lucille McClelland; her goddaughter, Patti Drake; and nieces and nephews.
