Many of you have had the opportunity to meet my new BFF, Arthur. Arthur is a 140 lb. Great Dane who comes to work at The Citizen offices every day, and goes pretty much anywhere else I can get away with taking him.

Arthur came to me through the Pennsylvania Great Dane Rescue organization, which saves Danes who end up in kill shelters and those who have been neglected, abandoned, abused or surrendered by people whose circumstances have taken a turn for the worse, or those who just didn't realize that cute little puppy was going to get "that big."

Recently I heard about a study that found that, as we age, men are happier with their lives than women. Part of the difference comes from financial aspirations, and some from family life.

Men's happiness begins exceeding women's when they reach their late 40s. No big surprise there! At that age many women are reaching the pinnacle of success in their careers, but at the same time still bear most of the responsibility for home life that includes children and aging parents. The demands come from all sides with equal intensity.

Over the past months there has been a great deal of activity on the streets of Avalon Borough and while these activities are considered undesirable by most members of the community they are the focus of the Avalon Police Department.

These activities are mostly drug-related and there has been a great deal of news reported around it in The Citizen. Thankfully the news on the street is spreading quickly that the Avalon Police Department will not put up with drug-related activities on our streets or in the homes of those that have decided to take up residence here.

Our editor permitting, I would like to share with The Citizen readers a telephone conversation I had with Aaron Stubna regarding retraction of the section of the pro-liquor advertisement in The Citizen, Feb. 4, 2011, pertaining to Allegheny County. I reiterated this conversation to councilman Mark Helbling, Bellevue’s assistant administrative services director Katie Hale, and Allegheny County’s Allegheny Together department director, Lance Chimka.

Many...may have read an article in a November edition of The Citizen that Avalon Borough was behind $80,000 in unpaid garbage bills as far back as 2008. I attend the monthly council meetings and at the meeting I asked how we could be so far behind on the garbage bill and for this long and not know about it. No one had an answer except that times are hard for so many people and unemployment is high. My other question was, did they contact these people and ask them to start a payment plan of any type to assist in paying the overdue bill?

Arthur, The Citizen's reporter dog, stopped by to lend a paw at Avalon's Dumpster Day on Saturday. His major contribution was eating a doughnut, but his heart was in the right place! Arthur is pictured here with his new buddy Aaron Meyer, Avalon Council members Rob Powell and Tom Lloyd, and volunteer Lee Nelson.

We just received word from PennDOT that the planned closing of Union Avenue will not occur this weekend after all. Motorists can, however, expect lane closings on I-279.

There are a number of stories in this week's edition of The Citizen that you won't want to miss. Among them are:
