Even though I am a vegetarian, Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays.

No, it's not because we get a day off in the middle of the week. That just causes more problems than it's worth when you work for a newspaper with a weekly deadline.

Thanksgiving provides me with what I like to consider a "reality check."

Rapidly approaching

Looking out at the warm, bright sunshine, it's hard to believe that Christmas is just a few weeks away.

But believe it or not, the holiday season is rapidly approaching, complete with that extra long "to do" list as we prepare to celebrate family, friends, and the joy of the season itself.

Happy Thanksgiving!

The kindergarten class at Bellevue Elementary School taught by Elizabeth Doerr wished everyone a Happy Thanksgiving as they donned costumes and made headdresses to become a tribe of Native Americans. The students performed a holiday pageant for their parents Tuesday morning, then enjoyed a small Thanksgiving feast of their own.

Avonworth proposes 2010-11 calendar

A tentative calendar for the 2010-11 school year was approved Monday by the Avonworth School Board.

If it receives final approval, the calendar will schedule the following:

The first day for students will be on Aug. 25. The schools will close for Labor Day on Sept. 6.

Schools will operate on a two-hour delay schedule on Sept. 15 for teacher-inservice.

Students will not have classes on Oct. 11, Columbus Day, which will serve as an Act 80 day for staff.

Another Act 80 day for staff is scheduled for Nov. 24, which cancels classes for students.

Assumption Story Time

Assumption School will hold a preschool story time on Thursday, Nov. 19, at 1 p.m.

Children ages 3-5 and their parents, are invited to attend. There will be stories, crafts, music and refreshments for the Thanksgiving season.
