Avalon's swimming pool will open this weekend without a concession stand, as council members found themselves without enough information to approve hiring employees last week.

In the absence of parks committee chairman Ralph Cortese, council hesitated during last Thursday's meeting when faced with voting on a motion to hire nine lifeguards, two cashiers and four concession stand workers.

In addition to the alcohol referendum on the Bellevue primary election ballot, there are quite a few other races across the North Boroughs that will have to be decided.

Although registered Independents normally cannot vote in primaries, they will be able to cast their votes in Bellevue for the referendum only.

Avalon officials are trying to work out a compromise in a parking dispute that is impacting a number of California Avenue businesses.

Council member Dan Sefick said that the automotive repair shop has been parking vehicles at metered, on-street parking spaces from the Birmingham Avenue intersection to McDonald-Linn Funeral Home, which has drawn complaints from other businesses in the block whose customers cannot find a place to park.

Sefick said that money is put in all the meters.

Avalon Borough will advertise for bids for a large quantity of stone to help repair the parking lot at the park damaged over the winter.

Street department foreman Keith Lorey said that about 690 tons of stone will be needed, at an estimated cost of $17 per ton and $12,000 total.

Parks committee chairman Ralph Cortese said at the April 20 council meeting that it would be nice to pave the lot, but the money "is not in the budget."

Council member Dave Dixon said that stone would result in a lot of dust, and asked whether some asphalt or oil could be placed on top of it.

Three new members were sworn in to seats on Avalon Council last Monday evening, including one who was just recently named the winner of a council seat by what was probably the lowest number of votes ever.

While Jonathan Bernstein and Thomas Lloyd Jr. were on the November ballot along with incumbents Ed Repp and Ralph Cortese, David Dixon was declared the winner of a council seat for which there were no candidates on the ballot. Dixon received four write-in votes, which was enough to beat out incumbent Albert Wurst, who received only three.

All candidates running for election to office in Avalon were unopposed, and it still remains to be seen if a third ward council seat has been filled.

Mayor David Haslett was re-elected with 633 votes.

Current council president Ed Klicker will move into the elected tax collector's office in January. Klicker, who appeared on both the Democratic and Republican tickets, received 689 votes.
