I'm having a hard time understanding the reluctance of some members of Bellevue Council to approve the fifth year of a farmers market. One of the key aspects of promoting and marketing Bellevue's main street business district is bringing in events that will in turn bring in people, some of whom might otherwise never visit Bellevue, and many of whom will patronize local businesses while shopping at the farmers market.

Saturday morning, bright and early, a lot of people will spread out across Bellevue to "Improve the 'Vue" by volunteering for community service projects. This is the second annual service project sponsored by the Bellevue Initiative for Growth and Revitalization (BIGr).

Many of the volunteers you'll see that day are people who are continually working, year 'round, on some project that benefits their community. Doing it on Sept. 24 is just part of their normal routine.

Tiny Mia, the grand-dog of Jane and Mike (pictured) Braunlich of Bellevue, makes a new friend while waiting for the start of the Pampered Pooch Promenade in Bellevue last Thursday evening. The annual event was part of the Summer Solstice Spectacular sponsored by Enjoy Bellevue. Proceeds of the walk will go to the Bellevue Dog Woods, an off-leash dog park being built by volunteers and private funds in Memorial Park.

The more cynical among us have probably already noted that the Northgate School Board waited until after the primary election to decide that, darn it, they were going to have to raise taxes after all.

The rest of you better catch up fast.

Because after telling everyone that there would be no tax increase this year, that's exactly what this board plans to do Monday night, as announced one week before they planned to vote.

Bellevue Elementary second graders in teacher Lynn Tennant Heffley’s class led the way in a school-wide coin collection to benefit the Bellevue Dog Woods, an off-leash dog park being built with private funds in Bellevue’s Memorial Park. In one week, the school raised nearly $800, with the second graders pictured here bringing in a heavy 30.8 lbs. of coins to lead the primary grades and the entire school. In the upper grades, two fourth grade classrooms -- taught by Gail Bernauer and Wendy Santelli -- tied with 17.8 lbs. collected by each.

It is time, once and for all, to shut down the Glaser Avenue sidewalk project and just admit that it was a bad idea that only got worse as time went by. Which is what generally happens when no one puts a stop to bad ideas.

There’s no season quite as fun as summer, you have to admit, and you don’t have to travel far to have a great time.

It was standing room only at Avalon Field for the annual North Boroughs Independence Day fireworks. Pyrotechnico promised us lots of "oohs" and "aahs," and that's exactly what they delivered. Unfortunately there was a slight problem getting the CD to work, so the fireworks went up without musical accompaniment. We'll try that again next year!

Emsworth property owners who got a reprieve from weed-cutting last summer won’t be so lucky this year.

Last July, more than 20 Emsworth residents attended the council meeting to object to the borough’s announcement that the publioc works department would no longer be cutting weeds along the sides of roads abutting private property. Those weeds were determined to be the responsibility of the individual prioperty owners, who could be cited and fined if the weeds weren’t cut down.
