The Avonworth School District has come up with a solution to the problem faced by parents who need before-class care for their children.

Starting in January, the district had discontinued its practice of allowing parents who work to drop off their children at the elementary school as early as 8 a.m. The acton was taken on the advise of the solicitor, who said Avonworth was not-licensed to provide daycare.

The sudden action has left parents in a bind, however.

Avonworth Elementary School could have an assistant principal beginning with the second semester of this school year.

The school board is expected to vote next Monday to hire someone for the job. Whoever fills the position will assist principal Dr. Darlene Tartaglione with various duties at the school including attendance and students issues and school schedules. The assistant will be paid an annual salary of $62,000 plus benefits.

School flu update Although Northgate has received confirmation of its first case of the H1N1 (swine flu) virus, the illness has not yet made much of an impact on student attendance.

Superintendent Dr. Reggie Bonfield told school board members Monday that one student has been confirmed to have contracted the virus. Bonfield said they he suspects that other students have as well, but those cases have not been confirmed.

Ten Bellevue Elementary School teachers were randomly selected to receive $100 gift cards from Sam’s Club after the school was given the Mt. Nebo store’s designation as having the “teachers of the year.” Store representatives said that the cards could be used to purchase items for their classrooms, something teachers often pay for themselves. The Avonworth School District may hire an assistant principal for the elementary school.

Personnel committee chair Brenda Barlek told school board members at their work session on Tuesday that the district needs to look into hiring an assistant, preferably this year.

Superintendent Dr. Valerie McDonald said that consultant John Esaias currently is helping elementary school principal Dr. Darlene Tartaglione.
