Ralph Smith Ralph E. "Bud" Smith, 85, of Bellevue, died Monday, July 19, 2010. Mr. Smith was a 1944 graduate of Bellevue High School and attended Pittsburgh Accountancy Academy, now Robert Morris University. He was a career life underwriter and was retired from Children's Hospital. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, past president of Avalon/Bellevue Kiwanis and a longtime member of Greenstone United Methodist Church in Avalon. He enjoyed his petunia garden.

The Ohio Township Police department is investigating a series of thefts in which G.P.S. and other electronic devices have been stolen from vehicles during the night. Police remind residents to lock their vehicles.

On July 15, Robert Becker, 55, of Ben Avon, was arrested and is being charged with disorderly conduct and terroristic threats after making vulgar and threatening comments to neighbors.

Ryan Adams, 33, of Emsworth, was arrested for violating a protection from abuse order on July 18.

Scrap metal and a yard roller were reported stolen from a yard on Cityview Avenue on July 13. The property is valued at $200.

A 20-inch Schwinn bicycle was reported stolen from California Avenue on July 14.

A local man has received the American Legion Valor Award for his actions under attack in Afghanistan last fall.

U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer 4 Patrick Benson, who grew up in the Bellevue/Ross area, joined the Army in 1992, hoping to fulfill his dream of becoming a helicopter pilot. Since 1996, he has been piloting Kiowa helicopters, small, armed aircraft that provide security for the larger Black Hawk Medevac helicopters, among other assignments.

Theodore Andartes Theodore J. Andartes, formerly of Emsworth and husband of the late Dorothy Andartes, died Thursday, July 8, 2010. Mr. Andartes was a Mason and member of the North Hills Lodge. He was a former elder at Mt. Nebo Presbyterian Church. He is survived by five children, Gloria Moss, Barbara Fonzi, Donna Faynor, John Andartes and Dorothy Derbish; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Andartes and Madeline Britsch.

David Lozano, 51, of Bellevue, was arrested for driving under the influence on July 10. Lozano was driving erratically and seen throwing an empty alcoholic beverage bottle out of his window on Ben Avon Heights Road.

On July 13, Dennis Kevin Redmond, 20, of Bell Acres, was arrested for driving under the influence during a traffic stop on McAleer Road in Ohio Township. His also is being charged with underage drinking, reckless driving, and restrictions on alcoholic beverages.

Police were called to a South Birmingham Avenue apartment building on July 4 when two people were reported to be in an unoccupied apartment. Officers found that the door to the apartment had been kicked in, and caught two people climbing down a fire escape. Charged with criminal mischief were Joseph Kastory, 31, of Center Avenue, and Sherry Pogany, 26, of Florence Avenue.

Witnesses told police on July 1 that they had observed a man urinating on the wall of the church near the borough hall on California Avenue. Daniel Starkey, 46, of California Avenue, was charged with disorderly conduct.

A Bellevue man faces multiple felony charges after he attempted to outrun police on a motorcycle, then threw himself into oncoming traffic.

Police say that David Davis, 35, may have become agitated after being served with a Protection From Abuse (PFA) no-contact order earlier Wednesday night. About 1 a.m. Thursday, he was observed on a motorcycle on Ohio River Boulevard in Emsworth, where police say he ran the red light at Camp Horne Road.

Longtime Northgate School Board member Charles Miklos died last weekend.

Miklos, 81, of Bellevue, died Sunday, July 4, 2010 while with family on vacation.

Vacations were never something that stopped Miklos from participating in Northgate School Board business during his 26-year tenure. For many years he made sure to call in from his vacation home in Conneaut so he could be a part of meetings.

Aloysius Gallagher Aloysius M. Gallagher, 70, of Allison Park, died Tuesday, June 29, 2010. Mr. Gallagher worked as a consultant in human resources. He was a lector at St. Ursula Church in Allison Park and a volunteer and member of the Renew Group. He taught at the Heinz School of Carnegie Mellon University, St. Francis University, LaRoche College and Butler County Community College.

An Avalon man stopped for having the music in his car too loud ended up cited for disorderly conduct on June 27. Police say that Bruce Brown Jr., 20, of Clive Street, became hostile and shouted profanities at officers and passing motorists.

A driver whose vehicle malfunctioned ended up hitting a street sign on Jackman Avenue on July 1, then her vehicle continued along the sidewalk, hitting three parked cars. No injuries were reported.

Thomas Ochaba, 18, of California Avenue, was charged with underage drinking at Anthony’s on Ohio River Boulevard on June 25.

A Bellevue man was scheduled for a preliminary hearing yesterday after being arrested in connection with a shooting in Wilkinsburg.

David Hickman, 50, of Washington Avenue, was taken into custody June 12 by Bellevue Police. He was being held in the Allegheny County Jail on a $50,000 bond after being charged with aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person and terroristic threats.

W. Kirk Saylor William Kirk Saylor, 78, of Bellevue died Wednesday, June 23, 2010 in Forbes Hospice. Mr. Saylor was an active, longtime member of Greenstone United Methodist Church in Avalon. He was a 32nd degree Mason.

Several arrests for disorderly conduct were made recently by Ohio Township Police.

David Schultz, 20, and David Lawson, 18, both of Ross Township, were cited following a traffic stop on Camp Horne Road on June 25.

Brandon P. Durler, 20, of Bellevue, was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia after he was discovered in Avon Park after hours on JUne 29.

Eric Wright, 36, of Verona, also was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia during a traffic stop on Camp Horne Road in Kilbuck Township on June 30.

A Chestnut Avenue woman came close to being scammed by a caller before her husband stepped in and ended the attempted theft by deception.

Police say that the woman received a call from someone who pretended to be her grandson. He claimed to have been arrested and said that he needed her to wire him $2,000 to get out of jail. The woman’s husband took the phone and began asking the man questions, at which time the caller hung up.

Arlene Wible Arlene R. Heim Wible of Ohio Township died Saturday, June 5, 2010. She is survived by her husband, Walter J. Wible; her sister, Karen Clark and her husband Mal; and two nieces, Heather and Ashley Clark. Friends were received at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church until the time of services on Saturday. Following a traffic accident on Camp Horne Road, Kilbuck Township, Janice Tucker, 55, of Bridgeville, was arrested for driving under the influence on June 20.

On June 19, Stephen Michalski Jr., 25, of Pittsburgh, was charged with driving under the influence on Camp Horne Road, Ohio Township.

At a traffic stop on Route 65 in Kilbuck Township on June 24, Lena Johnston, 32, of Aliquippa, was charged with driving under the influence. A passenger in Johnston's car, Anthony Vestazian, 30, of Aliquippa, was arrested for possession of suspected cocaine.

A drug bust ended badly in Avalon last Thursday night, with a suspect attempting to run over a police officer and the officer shooting at the vehicle.

Avalon police Chief Tom Kokoski said that officers Walt Johnson and Matt McDanel were working in plainclothes, observing a drug deal occurring in Peach Alley. When the officers approached the car, Kokoski said, identifying themselves as police officers, the driver took off, headed right for Johnson. The chief said that Johnson fired three shots in self defense but did not hit the vehicle.

The woman sought by Bellevue Police for a purse snatching on June 3 turned herself in to police

Cynthia Russell, 25, of Hober Avenue, McKees Rocks, was charged with theft after turning herself in at the Bellevue Police Department on June 3 for a purse snatching in the 500 block of Lincoln Avenue.

A man was reportedly cut on the arm with a razor by a white male who fled in the area of Gilliland Place and Shiloh on June 2.

Jewelry was reported stolen from a Grant Avenue residence on May 27.

Michael Hilf Michael K. Hilf, 49, of Cranberry Township, formerly of Avalon, died Sunday, May 30, 2010. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Lucina Hilf; two daughters, Ashley and Becky; two sisters, Linda Hilf and Kathy Schreibeis and her husband Milton; and nieces, nephews and in-laws. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Mary Lou Hilf. Friends were received at Devlin Funeral Home of Cranberry until the time of services on Saturday. William Boyd William John Boyd, 60, of Emsworth, died Sunday, June 6, 2010.

Vandalism at Marmo Park in Emsworth was discovered on June 7 and 8. An Ohio Township Police officer on patrol found overturned and broken tables on June 7, and received a report of more vandalism to the tables on June 8.

Thomas Kastory, 19, of Emsworth, was cited for disorderly conduct on June 9. Police say he was in possession of drug paraphernalia.

Brian C. Cook, 43, of Ben Avon, was charged after a traffic stop on Ben Avon Heights Road in Ohio Township on June 4.

Two Bellevue residents were shot with paintballs on May 20. People on North Balph and North harrison avenues were hit by paintballs fired from a vehicle.

A man is reported to have stolen 20 cartons of cigarettes from the stock room at CVS Pharmacy on May 19.

The license plate was reported stolen from a vehicle on Ridge Avenue. The theft was reported May 21.

Two people were arrested for fighting at Bayne Park on May 19.

Ronald Holmes, 25, of South Howard Avenue, was arrested for retail theft from Dollar General on May 19.
