Yes, the Northgate football team is having their best season since apparently 2003. Yes, the team shows so much improvement on the field that they are actually enjoyable to watch. And yes, you now feel that you are getting your money’s worth when you go to a Friday night game.

But that is not what this letter is about. This letter is about the new coaching staff and their influence on our boys.

It was sad to see a report on WTAE-TV last week (July 20) informing us that 37.6 percent of children in the Northgate school district suffer from asthma. "The school district that's the biggest loser with asthma, for two school years in a row, is Northgate…" said the report. This says something about the Bellevue/Avalon area. The schools, of course, are simply places where these statistics can be conveniently collected for the state health department.

MURAL COMMENT NEEDED

In a recent edition of your paper, you reported an action of the Ben Avon Council (May 17 meeting) that almost went unnoticed by the residents. Except for a tie vote on a motion (which defeated the motion) council would have allowed a mural to be painted on the blank Dalzell Avenue wall of the fire station near Church Avenue. No matter no copy of the mural was presented, no matter there was no public discussion of the proposal, no matter the proposal was allowed to be made into a motion.

Memorial Day is about honoring all service members who passed on in defense of our country. It may have occurred in combat or in support of combat operations or having died in the line of duty just doing their jobs. Memorial Day is a day to reflect on knowing these sacrifices come because our country's military is protecting our nation and all it stands for, and remains continuously ready to do so.

FOCUS ON SCHOOLS Editor:

Our community has been debating alcohol or no-alcohol with a passion, but we have been less publically vocal on the impending budget doom in store for our Northgate School District, which will be devastating to our students and ultimately our community's well-being.

Reading through The Citizen's article on the budget, I noticed that CAD and Robotics will be eliminated, full-day kindergarten will be eliminated and the school musical is marked for elimination. These are all areas that directly affect our students.

I am following with interest the spirited debate on the pros and cons of allowing alcohol sales in Bellevue restaurants. I personally do not particularly want to see corner type bars in Bellevue. Nor do I want to see Section 8 housing, furniture rental stores, check cashing establishments, discount cigarette stores and multiple dollar stores, but alas we seem to attract them all.

Thinking that alcohol will bring prosperity to Bellevue is like asking a one-legged man to stand on his own two feet.

On May 17, voters in Bellevue will decide whether Bellevue remains "dry" or allows the sale of alcoholic beverages. Although some good people want to approve the referendum, I believe that allowing "booze in Bellevue" will be detrimental to our town.

As the mayor, his job is to represent the people, and hopefully make decisions and be an activist for the businesses that keep this town afloat.

BENEFITS OF MUSICAL THEATER Editor: It was a magnificent joy to watch our Northgate kids perform "All Shook Up," a musical set in 1955 with Elvis’ music and Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" plot. Musical theater has become a wonderful community tradition that gives back to our community, yet it is severely threatened by the state budget cuts.

This letter is in response to one written by James Rupert and published in The Citizen March 25, 2011.

Since Mr. Rupert has never attended an Emsworth Borough Council meeting nor is he a member of the Emsworth Volunteer Fire Company, it is very hard to understand why Mr. Rupert decided to inflame an entire community by such erroneous statements.

The very first inaccuracy to be addressed is that Emsworth Borough does not own the volunteer fire company, so not such action is possible.

We have an unacceptable problem at Avonworth Elementary School with 750 students expected this fall to be crammed into a building built for 550. However, given the current and expected population, the proposed solution of a 19 classroom K2 school is not in line with the scope of the issue.

I’m not sure how many, if any, Emsworth residents are aware that the Emsworth Borough Council is seriously considering closing the Emsworth VFD and moving all its equipment to the Ben Avon fire station in a fire department merger.

As a borough resident and more importantly a homeowner, I find this possible decision very irresponsible. While I’m all for our borough leaders looking for all ways to save money, closing the fire department should not be one of them.

When families are deciding where they want to live, there are certain things they are looking for: a safe and secure neighborhood, the highest quality education for their children, and fair and reasonable taxes that allow for a high quality of life and a reason to invest in their community. Over the past months there has been a great deal of activity on the streets of Avalon Borough and while these activities are considered undesirable by most members of the community they are the focus of the Avalon Police Department.

These activities are mostly drug-related and there has been a great deal of news reported around it in The Citizen. Thankfully the news on the street is spreading quickly that the Avalon Police Department will not put up with drug-related activities on our streets or in the homes of those that have decided to take up residence here.

I have lived in Bellevue for over 50 years and I didn’t know that we didn’t have to pay for rubbish pick-up or pay borough taxes if we didn’t want to. I assume this is true because when I read the newspaper I see that there are so many that do not pay their communal debts.

I reiterated this conversation to councilman Mark Helbling, Bellevue’s assistant administrative services director Katie Hale, and Allegheny County’s Allegheny Together department director, Lance Chimka.
