Claude Phipps Claude A. Phipps, 72, of Avalon, died Monday, Sept. 19, 2011 in Allegheny General Hospital. Mr. Phipps was the owner of Phipps 18th Century Flowers. He fostered cats and dogs from the Humane Society and shared peanut butter sandwiches with squirrels and enjoyed feeding birds. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Cardamone Phipps; his brother-in-law, Russell Cardamone of Sewickley; and his rescues, Jack, Belle, Willow and Cocoa. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fredrick "Ted" and Gladys Holt Phipps.

Avalon Police began the Megan Law notification of schools, businesses and residents after being informed on June 7 that a violent sex offender was residing at the Avalon Motel. Later that day, police were informed that Timothy Mitchell, 27, no known address, had moved out.

A burglary at an automotive business on california Avenue was reported June 5. A plate glass window had been smashed to get inside the shop.

Joann Johnson Joann A. Kaib Johnson, 65, of Glenfield and Ohio Township, died Tuesday, May 17, 2011. Mrs. Johnson enjoyed coloring, Bingo and trips to the casino.

Helen Rooney Helen V. "Vonnie" Rooney, 95, of Elmira, NY, formerly of Pittsburgh and wife of the late Paul Rooney, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2010. Mrs. Rooney had been a longtime member of Annunciation Church and past president of its Christian Mothers Association. She enjoyed bowling and her card clubs. She was an accomplished seamstress and cook.

Aloysius Gallagher Aloysius M. Gallagher, 70, of Allison Park, died Tuesday, June 29, 2010. Mr. Gallagher worked as a consultant in human resources. He was a lector at St. Ursula Church in Allison Park and a volunteer and member of the Renew Group. He taught at the Heinz School of Carnegie Mellon University, St. Francis University, LaRoche College and Butler County Community College.

Broadway arrives in the North Boroughs this week, with the staging of two standards of American musical theater at local high schools.

Northgate students will take audiences back to the era of Elvis and the earliest days of rock 'n roll with its production of "Bye Bye Birdie," while Avonworth students will drop back a few years more, to the Roaring ‘20s, with its presentation of "Mame."

William Bartus William C. Bartus, 92, of Oakdale, PA, husband of the late Betty J. Megahan Bartus, died Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009. Mr. Bartus was a retired printer from Bankers Lithographics in Blawnox. He was a member of St. Patrick Church, Noblestown, the Holy Name Society and Meals On Wheels in Oakdale. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Rosemary Heflin Rosemary Heflin, 77, of Bellevue, died Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009. Mrs. Heflin was a local politician serving as a Bellevue Council member and mayor. She is survived by her husband, Jack F. Heflin; six children, Kathy Conlon and her husband Tom of Tampa, FL, Roberta J. Conway and her husband Michael of Bellevue, Judith Glinski of Moon Township, Laura Ann Kozlowski of West View, Jack F. Heflin Jr. of Bellevue and David E. Heflin and his wife Jennifer of Emsworth; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a grandchild.

Mr. Lundell was a U.S. Amy veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was retired from Headliner as a lithographer.
