How do the days and months go by so quickly? It seems like such a short time ago that we were here at this point, closing out one year and preparing for the next.

With time going by so rapidly, each of us caught up in the busy-ness of our individual lives, sometimes we forget to stop and say thank you to all the people who matter in our lives.

In case we need reminded -- and many of us do -- starting a new year makes us stop and think about the fact that we all, on a daily basis, make choices about how we will live our lives and see the world around us.

With all the emphasis on resolutions right now, we can't help but think about what we'd like to change in our lives. It's really not so much about being successful in attaining your particular resolution, but just the fact that you recognize that you possess the power and ability to make changes in your life.

The Citizen offices have a special guest today -- a tiny puppy named Cooper who belongs to a friend but likes to visit with his Aunt Connie.

Normally Christmas Eve is a day filled with last-minute holiday hysteria, as we realize that time has just about run out on all the things we haven't managed to do in the last month. Maybe even the last year.

A healthy carry-over from 2011 helped convince Bellevue Council members that no property tax increase is necessary for 2012.

Council voted unanimously at its Dec. 30 meeting not to enact a proposed .25 mill tax increase, although members reversed themselves and voted for a 25 cent increase in the sewer surcharge per 1,000 gallons of water used. Council member Lisa Blaney-Stewart was absent from her final meeting.

The Northgate girls' basketball team has had a tough start to the new year.

In their first game back from winter break, the girls lost to section opponent Bishop Canevin, 77-43.

Avalon Borough is starting off the year with a clean budgetary slate for a change, having ended 2009 in the black and adopting a $2.9 million spending plan for the new year.

Borough manager Harry Dilmore said that in past years, deficits had demanded about half of the borough's $300,000 tax anticipation loan be spent to clear up bills from the prior year. The loan is meant to keep government operating until tax revenues are received in the spring.

Bellevue Council started off the new year with a bang. With four officials not invited to take part in an early swearing-in ceremony, the night took a turn for the worse as council members got a few surprises before the evening ended with a plea from the mayor for everyone to check their egos at the door.
