A team of young television producers from Avonworth Middle School will have the opportunity to see their public service announcement aired on stations across the state after taking the top score in a contest sponsored by Drug Free Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania National Guard Counterdrug Joint Task Force.

The 2011 “Sound Off” television and radio PSA contest challenged students to produce a TV or radio spot based on the theme “Prescription for Success.”

Walls have often been the objects of symbolic significance.

Then there's Pink Floyd's wall and President Reagan's end-of-the-Cold War-cry, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall."

Climbing to fitness

The newest goal of Avonworth teachers Phil Coffin and Mike Lincoln is the construction of an indoor climbing wall. The Avonworth School Board voted Monday to authorize the teachers to write a grant application in an attempt to get $50,000 in funding for the project from the Highmark Healthy High 5 program.

Coffin and Lincoln have been responsible for obtaining grant funds and instituting other programs designed to promote physical activity and fitness among students.

Avonworth Teachers Propose “Behavioral Expectations”

The union representing Avonworth School District teachers called together community leaders last week to urge the adoption of "behavioral expectations" for students.

Avonworth Middle School teachers brought together school board members and district administrators, along with parents, police and other community leaders, in an effort to stem a growing tide of minor disciplinary problems before they become a flood.
