Bellevue officials have spent most of the past month drowning in the issue of how to manage the Memorial Park swimming pool this year.

Some officials say that the pool is safer and better run with a professional pool management company. The other side denies that, and says running the pool in-house takes a lot fewer tax dollars.

Bellevue to manage pool

The Borough of Bellevue is now looking for a swimming pool manager and lots of lifeguards after council rejected a proposal from a pool managment company at Tuesday’s regular meeting.

For the last two years, the Memorial Park swimming pool has been managed by SwimAmerica, which hired all of the guards and managed day-to-day operations. Prior to that, Bellevue’s pool had been managed in-house, with a pool manager and guards hired directly by the borough.

The hiring of additional pool personnel and another meter attendant were approved by Bellevue Council at its June 22 meeting.

Council originally hired two people to work as cashiers at the Memorial Park swimming pool, although the hirings were contingent upon the parks and recreation committee finding enough money in the budget to pay for the positions.

Pool funding meeting

Bellevue Council will hold a special meeting this Saturday to decide how the borough will pay for a pool management company hired last month.

After committing to paying Swim America $85,000 to hire lifeguards and manage the operation of the Memorial Park swimming pool this summer, officials discovered that the money was not budgeted, and that they had been directed to a budget line item that reflected pool revenue rather than one authorizing the expenditure. That revenue goes into the borough's general fund and is spent throughout the budget.

Bellevue to try pool company

Bellevue will turn to a professional pool management company to cover the Memorial Park swimming pool this summer.

Council's parks and recreation committee held an emergency meeting last Saturday when officials realized that they had not received viable applications for the pool manager's position. According to committee chair Lisa Blaney-Stewart, the borough received proposals from only one individual, but two companies.The committee recommended entering into a contract with one of the companies, Swim America, owned by a Bellevue resident.
