I checked to see if there was a full moon on Wednesday. Given the jaw-dropping displays that occurred in government settings across the North Boroughs, I was sure the moon was exerting some major influence.

Nope. No full moon. Not even a new moon, or even a quarter moon. The moon could not be responsible.

There must be something in the water.

About 130 people attended the town hall meeting Friday to discuss the changes that are coming to Allegheny General Hospital - Suburban Campus.

That was a pretty decent crowd for 6:30 p.m. on a Friday evening in May.

Even while government mandates and grant funding opportunities are encouraging neighboring municipalities to identify cooperative projects, the North Boroughs continues to be challenged by legislative boundaries that piecemeal the cohesive area.

Drozd re-elected to county council

The North Boroughs' representative on the Allegheny County Council will keep his seat in January, as Republican Matt Drozd defeated Democratic challenger Tom Michalow of Avalon.

Although Michalow carried most of the North Boroughs, Drozd carried traditionally Republican areas to secure his second term on county council.

Overall, Drozd received 10,051 votes to Michalow's 7,709. Vote totals by municipality were, first for Drozd, then Michalow:

Michalow challenges Drozd for District 1 County Council seat

Avalon Council member Tom Michalow is challenging Republican incumbent Matt Drozd for the District I seat on Allegheny County Council.

Michalow, a Democrat, was born and raised in McCandless and is a 1989 North Allegheny High School graduate. He is a 1993 distinguished graduate of Virginia Military Institute.

Michalow received a master’s of education degree from Duquesne University in 1998, along with teaching certificates for social studies and German. He teaches history and German at Northgate High School.
