Vans wanted

The Northgate School Board is being asked to approve the rental of two vans to transport student athletes participating in track this spring.

The district at one time rented the vans to take Northgate students to the Avonworth field for practices. Track is a cooperative Avonworth - Northgate sport that is held at the neighboring school because it has the facilities needed for the events.

The rental practice was eliminated during budget cost-cutting efforts, and students were left to find their own way to Avonworth, either with their parents or another student.

Northgate keeps cuts in proposed final budget

After hearing from those opposed to some of the cuts made to balance the Northgate School District’s 2011-12 budget, the board voted Monday to propose a spending plan with no tax increase, and no funding for full-day kindergarten, a spring musical, or several teaching positions.

About 15 students concerned about the reduction of funding for the high school musical told the board that the musical taught them the value of hard work, was a lot of fun, brought the students closer, let students express themselves, and improved the students' singing and acting abilities.

Restructuring discussed

The Northgate School Board may be taking a look at restructuring the district's elementary schools, a step the board has been told is necessary if Northgate ever needs to change the elementary school set-up to reduce costs.

A restructuring of the schools could include a merger or consolidation of the facilities.

Co-op wrestling targeted for cuts

The Avonworth-Northgate wrestling program is the latest target of school officials looking for ways to trim their budgets.

Wrestling is one of four cooperative sports programs shared by the two local school districts because neither has enough students to support its own teams. The other sports, for which the districts split the costs evenly, are golf, swimming and track.

A recent meeting of administrators from both districts produced what Avonworth superintendent Dr. Valerie McDonald termed a "collaborative agreement" to eliminate wrestling for a number of reasons.

Northgate start date

The post-Labor Day faction won this year's school calendar debate, so Northgate students will start school on Sept. 7 next year.

Start times at Northgate have fluctuated over the last several years depending on the make-up of the school board, with two groups equally dedicated to their views on whether classes should begin before or after the fall holiday.

Coin toss decides board officers

It took nine roll call votes, two recesses and a coin toss before the Northgate School Board was able to elect a new president during the reorganization meeting Monday evening.

Incumbent Charles Miklos was elected to two board seats -- one for a four-year term and one for a two-year term -- during the November general election, and chose to accept the four-year seat. That left a two-year vacancy and only eight board members available to elect new officers during the Dec. 7 meeting.

Primary Election Results

Although there will be many races to be decided in the November general election, Tuesday's primary went a long way toward deciding who will occupy several municipal and school board offices next year, despite voter turnout that averaged around 15 percent of registered voters.

The top contests in the primary all but determined who will be the mayor in two boroughs.

Six seek Northgate board seats

Six candidates are seeking both parties’ nominations for five Northgate School Board seats

There are four four-year seats available on the board, as well as one two-year seat.

Two incumbents, Shirl Reinhart and Charles Miklos, will run, along with former member Lorinda Hayes, Gary Paladin, Anthony Barbarino and Marita Bartholomew. Paladin and Bartholomew have thrown their names into the hat for vacant seats on the board in the past, but have never been selected.

Miklos and Barbarino are also running for the two-year seat.
