Did you ever take a logic class in college? Do high schools even offer logic classes? They should. The skills that come from a logic class are life-changing.

I loved my college logic class. It was one of the first signs that my future included law school. Right after debating everyone in my high school, regardless of position, and organizing a variety of protests. It was the '70s, after all.

But logic stuck with me even after I became a much mellower person, not inclined to frequent debate or protest.

For the benefit of the one or two people (it seems) who do not already know, I had the opportunity to experience firsthand the reality of the closing of the Suburban Campus emergency room and inpatient units very soon after last Friday's change.

I had an accident Saturday night, not long before the urgent care center was to close at 10 p.m. At that time I believed that all I needed was urgent care treatment so I decided to wait until the next morning for it to open again. I have a feeling a lot of people out there will be doing this. Take it from me, it's probably not a good idea.

The dispute over whether a Kilbuck property owner can build a driveway that exits onto an Emsworth street may move into a new venue, after Emsworth officials announced their decision not to approve the construction.

The presence of attorneys and threats of litigation have marked the debate between Kilbuck property owner Eric Faulkner and Emsworth homeowner Norma Hildenbrand, whose Ohio Street property abuts the proposed driveway location.

You will not be buying alcoholic beverages by the glass in Bellevue anytime soon, whether at bars, restaurants or any other type of establishment. Voters in the town rejected a referendum on the primary election ballot that would have turned Bellevue’s historically-dry status to one that allowed two businesses to begin selling alcohol.

Bellevue will take its proposed 2011 budget down to the wire, with the major points of contention left unresolved despite extensive debate at a special meeting on Tuesday.

Council reached a consensus on only one of three sticking points, that of next year’s garbage fee increase. Major points that could sway a final vote on the budget on Dec. 28 are the sewer surcharge and a raise for the public works supervisor.

Most people who know Sean Adams think he's a fairly down-to-earth guy.

His Emsworth office is as basic as an office can be: folding tables, folding chairs, a few laptops. No fancy eating habits, either. The mini-fridge is stocked with soft drinks and the microwave stands ready to heat up cans of Dinty Moore beef stew stacked five high on top.

It could have been much worse, but the combination of an effective emergency response plan and what can only be called acts of God prevented an environmental nightmare when a tanker truck carrying a toxic chemical overturned on Union Avenue Wednesday afternoon.

The tanker was traveling down Union Avenue toward the North Boroughs about 3 p.m. when the driver attempted to turn onto the I-279 southbound on-ramp. Officials believe several tires hit a rut beside the ramp, the driver overcompensated, and the tanker flipped.

Bellevue Police Chief Matt Sentner would like to see the borough council budget money next year to hire a new police officer -- one who will patrol on four legs instead of two.

Sentner told council members Tuesday that outside funding likely is available not only to pay for a police dog, but the training necessary for both dog and the officer who will be handling him. The major expense facing Bellevue, he said, will be for a special police car that contains a built-in kennel. That car will stay with the dog and the human officer at all times, he said.

Arthur, The Citizen's reporter dog, stopped by to lend a paw at Avalon's Dumpster Day on Saturday. His major contribution was eating a doughnut, but his heart was in the right place! Arthur is pictured here with his new buddy Aaron Meyer, Avalon Council members Rob Powell and Tom Lloyd, and volunteer Lee Nelson.

Editor:

I was happy, and at the same time got a reminder laugh, to read the statement of Northgate School Board’s Shirl Reinhart that a college visitation program costing “...a couple thousand dollars each year” faces possible elimination. (The Citizen, March 12).

Don’t like the word “possible.” I would strongly urge the continuing of good financial responsibility and scrap the “...or reduction of the trip...” consideration.
