The Northgate School Board's annual debate over when to start classes in the fall is expected to be settled at the Dec. 12 board meeting.

Board members continue to discuss whether school should start before or after Labor Day, with the calendar changing in that regard almost every year.

The summer swimming season ended early for people in this area as wet, chilly weather moved in over the Labor Day weekend, but that didn’t stop local dogs from taking to the water on Monday.

Pictured here, the dog pool party at Bellevue’s Memorial Park swimming pool was a big hit with canines of all sizes as well as their human companions. The party was sponsored by the Bellevue Dog Woods Association as a fund-raiser for the off-leash dog park currently under construction in an adjacent area of Memorial Park.

The first day of school for Northgate students will be before Labor Day next year.

At its meeting on Monday the board approved a 2011-12 calendar that sets the first day of classes for students on Monday, Aug. 29.

The annual school calendar debate will return to the agenda of the Northgate School Board, where members will choose between pre- and post-Labor Day start dates for classes.

Board member Dr. Shannon Smithey commented at the board’s work session Monday that parents were more annoyed by the fact that the start date varied by so much every year than whether it came before or after the holiday. She suggested setting the school opening date on the same day every year -- for instance, Sept. 1 -- adding or subtracting a day to ensure that the term does not start with a one-day week.

Hip-hop: Most people either hate or love the genre of music linked to bands such as Notorious B.I.G, Naz, Public Enemy, Lil Wayne.

And for most people over 40, it's probably more the former -- hate -- than the latter, with little chance that anything might change their minds.

Really, now. CD jackets with "Parental Advisory" prominently displayed, lyrics sometimes built around violence, drugs, life in the 'hood.

Not exactly North Boroughs fare.

Avalon will not see the benefit of allowing Bellevue pool pass holders to use Avalon's pool at the beginning of the season.

When Bellevue was unable to get its pool open by Memorial Day, pass holders from the neighboring borough were allowed to use Avalon's pool at no additional cost. The agreement at the time was that Bellevue would return the favor at the end of the season, after the Labor Day holiday.

Northgate students will be attending school on Monday, April 5, to make up a school day lost to bad weather this winter.

School board member David Natale said that although April 5 is not a great choice because it is the day of the Pirates’ opening game, the only other day students could have attended classes was Good Friday. He said that the situation provided a perfect example of one reason why school should start before Labor Day.

The board also voted at its March 15 meeting to ratify Feb. 15 as another make-up day.

A tentative calendar for the 2010-11 school year was approved Monday by the Avonworth School Board.

If it receives final approval, the calendar will schedule the following:

The first day for students will be on Aug. 25. The schools will close for Labor Day on Sept. 6.

Schools will operate on a two-hour delay schedule on Sept. 15 for teacher-inservice.

Students will not have classes on Oct. 11, Columbus Day, which will serve as an Act 80 day for staff.

Another Act 80 day for staff is scheduled for Nov. 24, which cancels classes for students.

The post-Labor Day faction won this year's school calendar debate, so Northgate students will start school on Sept. 7 next year.

Start times at Northgate have fluctuated over the last several years depending on the make-up of the school board, with two groups equally dedicated to their views on whether classes should begin before or after the fall holiday.

While many students across the country were watching a live broadcast of President Obama's back to school speech on Tuesday at noon, many local students were not, and continued with their school days as normal.

That's not to say that they won't get an opportunity to in the future, though.

Avalon Elementary parking Borough officials and Avalon PTO members have come up with a plan to help ease parking problems created when parents drop-off and pick-up their child-ren at school.

A resolution approved by Avalon Council at its Aug. 18 meeting will allow parents to purchase a parking permit that will let them park in front of the school, between North School Street and North Chestnut Street, from 7:30 until 8:30 a.m. and from 2:30 until 4 p.m. on weekdays.
