The Northgate basketball team's playoff run came to a screeching halt last Saturday, when they ran into a well prepared and determined Steel Valley team (6-6, 8-14).

Steel Valley entered Saturday's game coming off a three game losing streak, while the Flames had won two of their last four. The Flames had lost against South Park and Central Valley, two much larger schools. Hence, the prognosticators had the Flames advancing to the first round.

The Northgate Flames honored their seniors last Friday night by downing the ‘Lopes from Avonworth for the second time this season. The Flames and the Antelopes battled hard in what turned out to be another hard fought rivalry game.

The Flames jumped on top early, as senior guard Matt Garrison knocked down a 3-point shot to get the Flames off and running. Northgate took advantage of their inside game by working the ball in to Josh Douglass and Jon Girvin, and outscored Avonworth 17-9 in the first quarter

The Northgate Flames fell short Tues-day night in a hard- fought battle against Aliquippa that was decided in overtime.

The Flames relied heavily on Jon Girvin early in the game, and Northgate's guards worked the ball inside frequently, allowing Gir-vin to pick up 8 of his game-leading 20 points in the first quarter. The pace of the game was fast due to the ‘Quip's constant pressure, and the first quarter ended with Northgate trailing 15-19.

Northgate traveled into hostile territory Tuesday night, and came away with a much needed section win against the ‘Lopes from Avonworth.

The Flames opened up the game in their man-to-man defense, and with Josh Douglass shadowing Avonworth's Mitch Locher. Locher leads the ‘Lope's high powered offense, averaging 26 points a game.

The first quarter was highlighted by the defensive play of both teams. The referees, at times, turned a blind eye to the physical play, as bodies were hitting the floor, and creating the atmosphere that big time rivalries feed upon.

The Northgate Flames played host to the Lions from New Brighton on Tuesday night, and though the game got close at the end, the Lions snatched victory from the grasp of the Flames.

The Flames came into Tuesday's game with a 4 - 7 overall record, 1-3 in the section, and trying to rebound from a section loss to a very good Beaver Falls team last Friday night.

The Northgate Flames' woes continued this past Friday night, as they got rolled over by a traditionally tough Springdale Dynamos football team.

Though the Flames have shown a lot of heart in their losses, their frustrations have gone on display with undisciplined football that is laden with costly penalties. The Flames have lost three in a row, two of those being conference games, and they appear to be losing confidence as their losing streak continues.

Another week has gone by in which the Avonworth/Northgate track team has performed well but come up a bit short of a victory.

On the boys' team there were many individual performances that scored points for the team in a dual meet.

Josh Douglass placed second in the 110 meter hurdles, triple jump and long jump, and first in the discus. Patrick Parra placed third in the 110 meter hurdles and first in the 300 meter intermediate hurdles.

Competition is finally under way for the Avonworth/Northgate track team, as they competed in the Trojan Track and Field Classic at Center High School on Saturday.

Overall the team performed well and had a few top six finishers. On the girls' team, Samiya Ferguson finished fourth in the 100 meter dash. In addition, Bridgit Walters finished fifth in the 1600 meter run and Mikell Schlumpf finished second in the 300 meter hurdles.

After losing the last three games of the season and finishing 3-17, the Northgate boys' basketball team will hope that the game-time experiences gained by the younger players this year will carry over into a more successful season next year.

And with the Flames' top two leading scorers returning next year, it looks like they already have a headstart. But that's not to say that the boys will be taking it easy in the offseason.

"We are going to do a lot over the spring and fall and we will be ready for next year," head coach Perry Harrop said.

The Northgate Flames continued their icy skid this week, dropping two section games with losses to Seton LaSalle and Carlynton. Northgate lost to the Carylnton Cougars 61-58 on Tuesday, increasing the winless streak to 12 games. Head coach Perry Harrop said that although the Flames cut down on the number of turnovers and were shooting the ball well offensively, the difference-maker in the game was the number of three-pointers made by both sides. He said Carlynton hit 10 threes, while Northgate dropped only six.

The Northgate boys' basketball team continued to struggle this week, as the Flames dropped another three games, upping their current losing streak to 10.

Northgate lost to Seton-LaSalle 59-48 on Wednesday night, and Brentwood, 67-41, on Tuesday.

The Flames preceded those losses with another to the North Catholic Trojans on Jan. 15.

Northgate struggled to score throughout the game against the Trojans, especially in the second and third quarters, as they fell 61-29.

The weather isn't the only thing that has been a little cold the last few weeks. The Northgate boys' basketball team has lost five games in a row.

Flames' head coach Perry Harrop attributes the team's struggles to their turnover woes.

"Turnovers are a major issue," he said. "It is a season-long problem."

Harrop said that Northgate is turning over the ball about once in every three possessions. He noted that teams he has coached in the past had turnover averages below 20 percent.

Harrop said that the Flames also are having trouble converting foul shots.

Someone once said, "The key to success is often the ability to adapt."

That adage proved true when the Northgate Flames hosted Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (OLSH) on Monday. A defensive change at half-time from a man-to-man defense to zone helped the Flames slow down OLSH's offense, and held them scoreless for the last three minutes of the game.

That, coupled with a nine-point, fourth quarter burst from sophomore Jon Girvin and missed OLSH free throws late in the game, sealed the deal on Northgate's 56-55 come-from-behind win.

Despite 23 turnovers, the Northgate boys' varsity basketball ball team opened up its season with a win against Avonworth last Friday, at the 'Lopes tip-off tournament.

The Flames followed that win, however, with a loss to Quaker Valley in the championship game on Dec. 12, a game that featured a head coaching match-up between a former master and apprentice.

Northgate head coach Perry Harrop said that the Flames shot the ball well during the Avonworth game, sinking 70 percent of their shots. He noted that the boys ran the floor well and were taking good shots.
