Another week has gone by in which the Avonworth/Northgate track team has performed well but come up a bit short of a victory.

On the boys' team there were many individual performances that scored points for the team in a dual meet.

Josh Douglass placed second in the 110 meter hurdles, triple jump and long jump, and first in the discus. Patrick Parra placed third in the 110 meter hurdles and first in the 300 meter intermediate hurdles.

Competition is finally under way for the Avonworth/Northgate track team, as they competed in the Trojan Track and Field Classic at Center High School on Saturday.

Overall the team performed well and had a few top six finishers. On the girls' team, Samiya Ferguson finished fourth in the 100 meter dash. In addition, Bridgit Walters finished fifth in the 1600 meter run and Mikell Schlumpf finished second in the 300 meter hurdles.

Several Northgate-Avonworth swim team members set new school records while participating in the WPIAL championships last Thursday and Friday at the University of Pittsburgh's Trees Hall.

On the first day of competition, the girls' 200 medley relay team consisting of Amanda Silay, Alison Gusew, Bridgit Walters and Shannon Burns placed 25th. Next, the boys' 200 medley relay team of Jimmy Silay, Aaron Makatura, Robert Johnston and Connor Mulligan also finished in 25th place.

The Northgate girls' basketball team experienced a rough end to their season, losing five straight before finishing with a win.

The girls recorded losses to Seton LaSalle (68-23) and South Fayette (69-11) before taking on Brentwood in the final game.

The team was hoping to give a victory to their two senior members, Erica Benny and Karianne Hoover. The girls put the last five games behind them and played one of their best games of the season to pull out a victory, 51-38.

The girls' and boys' Northgate-Avonworth swim teams had a tough time when they faced Hampton at home. Both teams ended up losing, but performed well.

In addition, the teams finally were able to have their Senior Night swim meet against Knoch. The team said goodbye to seven seniors, including Shannon Burns, Alison Gusew, Melanie Kramer, Leah Mantick, Amanda Silay, Jimmy Silay and Kate Ward.

The teams were hoping to give the seniors a win in their last home meet, but the girls' team ended up losing 80-78, and the boys' team lost 78-70.

The Northgate girls’ basketball team came close to beating New Brighton before defeating another opponent this past week.

Coming off the loss to Avonworth, the girls' basketball team was ready to defeat New Brighton, one of the teams they had lost to earlier in the season. The first quarter put the team down by four, 9-5. Through the entire second quarter, Northgate stayed within range of New Brighton, and cut the deficit down to two, 15-13.

With two section games in a row, the Northgate girls' basketball team was hoping to stop their section losing streak at two.

Their first chance to stop the streak came against South Fayette. The girls played a strong first quarter to take the lead at 14-9, but saw a reversal of fortune in the second quarter. South Fayette held the team to only four points, which made the score at half, 21-18.

In the third quarter, both teams were more offensive then defensive. Each team gave up over 10 points. The third quarter ended with South Fayette in the lead 37-29.

Both the girls' and the boys' Northgate-Avonworth swim teams defeated Freeport easily, competing at a high level and qualifying for the WPIALs in four different events.

On the boys' team, Jimmy Silay qualified in the 100 yard freestyle and the 200 yard individual medley, to make this his sixth qualification of the season.

On the girls' side, Annie Gould set another school record while qualifying for her second event of the season in the 200 yard freestyle.

The Northgate girls' basketball team has had a tough start to the new year.

In their first game back from winter break, the girls lost to section opponent Bishop Canevin, 77-43.

Coming off a disappointing season last year, the Northgate girls' basketball team rebounded with an impressive performance at the Wilkinsburg Tip-Off Tournament. In their first game, the team beat host, Wilkinsburg in a 43-42 buzzer-beater finish. This victory put them in the championship game against Clairton.

At the Avonworth/ Northgate swim team's first meet of the season, both the girls' and the boys' teams performed very well.

The girls' team beat Riverside 90-64, but the boys' team lost 94-65. Even though the boys' team lost, Jimmy Silay qualified for the WPIAL championships in three individual events. Those events include the 200-yard freestyle, the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke.
