The Avonworth girls’ basketball team will play in the WPIAL quarter-finals tonight after defeating their first two playoff opponents this past week.

The girls started their playoff run against Elderton last Friday, winning 38-21, before beating Bentworth Tuesday night, 50-36.

The 'Lopes completely dominated the first half of play against the Bentworth Bearcats, but struggled in the fourth quarter before pulling off the win.

The Lady ‘Lopes were led by Lauren Mayernik, who had 24 points and 13 rebounds.

In a section game at South Side Beaver Monday, the Avonworth girls’ basketball team got a huge effort from point guard Montee'a Hunter as they defeated the Rams 49-21.

"Tia played one of her best games ever," said coach Bob Schulz of Hunter, who finished with a game-high 18 points.

Kenneth Todoverto Sr. Kenneth M. Todoverto Sr., 81, of Bellevue died Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2011. He is survived by his wife, Loretta Todoverto; four children, Kenneth Todoverto Jr. and his wife Sandy, Janice Barry and her husband Mike, Carla Pritchard and her husband Glenn and Donna Boyer; his sister, Louise Killian; and five grandchildren, Brian Verlihay and his wife Steph, Steven Verlihay, Glenn Pritchard Jr., Becky Pritchard and Ally Boyer.

With the restart of section play since the holiday break, the Avonworth girls’ basketball team finds itself looking up at the leaders in section 6AA following a loss at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart this past Tuesday.

Having a tough time getting their offense on track, the Lady ‘Lopes fell to the Chargers 40-34 and saw their section record drop to 1-1 behind OLSH and Quaker Valley, both at 3-0.

"In the first half we didn't take very good shots and we didn't possess the ball well enough," said coach Bob Schulz.
