Into the storm

While many of us spent last weekend watching the Weather Channel as Hurricane Irene moved up the East Coast, more than 80 Western Pennsylvania residents were deployed to the eastern part of the state. Among them were four men from NorthWest EMS trained in swift water and flood rescue, and members of the regional rescue team created to respond to water-related emergencies.

Northgate cuts full-day kindergarten

The proposed final budget that will be voted on by the Northgate School Board Monday night will not include an increase in property taxes. It also will not include full-day kindergarten, a spring musical or a number of classes that could be lost due to teacher furloughs.

Although the board will vote Monday to approve the final proposal for spending in 2011-12, that proposal will not become the final budget until the board votes on June 20.

Margaret Robinette Margaret B. "Peggy" Robinette, 83, of Sewickley, wife of the late William Alexander Robinette, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2011 in UPMC Presbyterian Hospital.

Avalon Elementary parking Borough officials and Avalon PTO members have come up with a plan to help ease parking problems created when parents drop-off and pick-up their child-ren at school.

A resolution approved by Avalon Council at its Aug. 18 meeting will allow parents to purchase a parking permit that will let them park in front of the school, between North School Street and North Chestnut Street, from 7:30 until 8:30 a.m. and from 2:30 until 4 p.m. on weekdays.

Avonworth Names A.D.

Avonworth School District administrators were flooded with some 90 resumes after posting a job opening for an athletic director. That number first was cut down to 15, then down to three. Eventually there was only one candidate for the job.

The school board unanimously voted to hire Earl Chet Fuhrman as athletic director, replacing Greg Wagner, who resigned July 31.

“We were really impressed with his motivation, his exuberance for the job,” superintendent Dr. Valerie McDonald said at the board’s work session on Monday.
