Although the Allegheny County elections department continues to tabulate write-in votes from the May 17 primary election, elections officials have confirmed the winners of nominations for the Avonworth School Board and Emsworth Council.

The nearly 1,900 write-in votes cast for Avonworth School Board resulted in a slate of candidates comprised primarily of write-in candidates to upset an opposing slate that appeared on both the Democratic and Republican ballots.

Tempers flared at Emsworth Council's regular meeting on Wednesday during a normally routine item on council's agenda.

When it came time to approve the boroughs bill’s for the month, finance committee chairman David Heflin questioned two of the expenditures on the bill list, neither of which had received pre-approval from council.

The first was $321 for an appreciation dinner held for former borough solicitor Mike Marmo. The second was the painting of two of the borough's trucks at a cost of $1,500.

Although there will be many races to be decided in the November general election, Tuesday's primary went a long way toward deciding who will occupy several municipal and school board offices next year, despite voter turnout that averaged around 15 percent of registered voters.

The top contests in the primary all but determined who will be the mayor in two boroughs.
