Northgate teachers will not see an increase in their paychecks until next spring, having accepted a six-month pay freeze as part of a new four-year contract with the district.

Also being frozen by the new agreement is the schedule of salary “steps” that govern what teachers will be paid. Although teachers will receive various pay increases while moving up the 17-step schedule, the freeze means that a teacher hired in 2010 and one hired in 2014 will have the same starting salary, according to Northgate School Board member Gary Paladin.

Despite protests from a handful of residents who attended the Northgate School Board meeting Monday evening, the district’s elected officials not only adopted a budget funded by a one-mill property tax increase, but found another $60,000 in additional expenditures to add to the bottom line.

Despite a growing dissatisfaction with how financial and performance-related issues are being handled in the Northgate School District, every school board incumbent on the primary election ballot was renominated on both tickets.

Seven cross-filed candidates vied for five four-year board seats in Tuesday’s primary, and voters chose the same five on both tickets. Candidates Ron Coder and Yvonne Sentner were not chosen by either Democrats or Republicans.

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. After interviewing three candidates for an open two-year seat on the Northgate School Board, the board chose someone all too familiar with trying to acquire a seat.

The board appointed Gary Paladin, who has thrown his hat into the ring for a seat a number of times, in a 7-1 vote, with new board member Tony Barbarino opposed.

"He seemed like he already fit in," board member Charles Miklos said. "He impressed me."

Six candidates are seeking both parties’ nominations for five Northgate School Board seats

There are four four-year seats available on the board, as well as one two-year seat.

Two incumbents, Shirl Reinhart and Charles Miklos, will run, along with former member Lorinda Hayes, Gary Paladin, Anthony Barbarino and Marita Bartholomew. Paladin and Bartholomew have thrown their names into the hat for vacant seats on the board in the past, but have never been selected.

Miklos and Barbarino are also running for the two-year seat.
