Antelopes battle back for first round win

The first round of the WPIAL playoffs proved to be a tough game for Avonworth, who hosted Brentwood last Friday night. After trailing at halftime, the Antelopes battled back in the second half to defeat the Spartans 28-21.

The most dramatic point in the game came late in the fourth quarter, when Ryan Schmid returned a punt 95 yards to seal the win for the Antelopes, who will move on to face North Catholic in a quarterfinal game to be played at Fox Chapel at 7:30 p.m. tonight.

Antelopes win again

It didn't hurt that North Catholic's multi-talented quarterback was sidelined with a broken bone, or that the Trojans made some costly errors that turned the ball over to Avonworth no less trhan four times. Despite accumulating about 100 yards in penalties, the Antelopes left the stadium in Fox Chapel Friday night with a 17-3 victory and a ticket to the WPIAL semi-finals.

Lady ‘Lopes’ defense destroys Shamokin

In their WPIAL first round game played this past Tuesday at Fox Chapel, the Avonworth girls’ basketball team relied on their tough play defensively to keep West Shamokin off balance and win easily, 62-30.

The Lady ‘Lopes forced the Wolves into a dreadful 10-of-44 shooting the ball while forcing 17 turnovers.

"We had the perfect defense for them,” said head coach Bob Schulz. “They're a very deliberate team and we wanted to press them into playing an up-tempo game." He then stated,"They didn't get a lot of good looks."
