Ben Avon may be able to have a handicapped-accessible rest room installed in the borough fire department building, and have it paid for by grant money through the Quaker Valley Council of Governments.

Borough Engineer Ed McGee received bids for the work last month, but the lowest one was $36,000, much higher than his estimate of $25,000 to $28,000.

Avalon Borough will advertise for bids for a large quantity of stone to help repair the parking lot at the park damaged over the winter.

Street department foreman Keith Lorey said that about 690 tons of stone will be needed, at an estimated cost of $17 per ton and $12,000 total.

Parks committee chairman Ralph Cortese said at the April 20 council meeting that it would be nice to pave the lot, but the money "is not in the budget."

Council member Dave Dixon said that stone would result in a lot of dust, and asked whether some asphalt or oil could be placed on top of it.

Leaf collection will begin in late October in Ben Avon.

Residents are asked to rake leaves to the curb. No twigs, branches, mulched material, grass or other debris will be collected.

A final pass will be made on each street the last week of November. Collection of leaves on Ohio River Boulevard will occur the first week of December.

Once a street has been collected for the last time, residents are asked not to place any additional leaves at the curbside. Leaves can be bagged for disposal during weekly refuse collection.

A $1.2 million renovation project for the borough building was approved unanimously by Bellevue Council at its regular meeting on May 5.

Jeff Foreman, an architect from the Eckles Group, which designed the building renovations, was present at the meeting and said that he had received the bids for the work to be done on the building.

According to director of administrative services Connie Flasher, the project includes renovating the administrative office area, making the building handicapped accessible, replacing the flooring in the building, and electrical, heating and cooling work.
