The Borough of Emsworth will conduct smoke tests of sanitary sewer lines in the area along Ohio River Boulevard.

The testing will take 2-3 days, weather permitting. The test will assist the borough in locating infiltration and exfiltration in the underground sewer system.

During the test, people may see smoke coming from vent stacks, manholes, inlets, and holes in the ground. The smoke has no color, and is non-toxic, non-staining, does not create a fire hazard and will dissipate in a few minutes.

Helen Crooks Helen Reitz Crooks, 79, wife of the late William H. Crooks Sr., died Saturday, Dec. 31, 2011. Mrs. Crooks enjoyed cooking and making cookies. She was an avid reader, enjoyed bowling, bingo, trivia games and traveling.

Sophia Regas Sophia Fakles Regas, 89, wife of the late John Fakles and John Regas, died Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2011. Mrs. Regas was the owner of the River Road Inn in Avalon for 39 years. She is survived by two daughters, Theodora Fakles and Pandora Bossick and her husband Dennis; her sister-in-law, Shea Banus; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Panagula Danus; and two siblings, Demetrios Danus and Maria Giannakos.

Dominic Angeloini Dominic A. Angeloini, 80, of the North Side, husband of the late Catherine M. Angeloini, died Tuesday, July 12, 2011. He is survived by three daughters, Angie and her husband Todd, Patty and her husband Brian and Toni and her husband Jack; his sister, Philomena; six grandchildren, Christina, Brandon, Nicole, Ashley, Zackery and Miranda; two great-grandchildren, Anthony and J.T.; nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews; and his dog, Ginger. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Mary Angeloini; and two siblings, Art Angeloini and Betty McBurney.

A proposed consolidation of fire services in several Avonworth communities got an official nudge forward from Emsworth Council Wednesday evening.

Council unanimously approved a motion to file a letter of intent to form a “fire district” for the purposes of consolidating buildings and equipment. According to Emsworth Council member Paul Getz, filing the letter of intent allows the municipalities involved to obtain additional state assistance with the consolidation process at no charge to any of the communities.

John Vuksic John M. Vuksic, 48, formerly of Bellevue, died Wednesday, May 4, 2011. He is survived by two sisters, Maryann V. Pfund and her husband Robert and Teresa Pelle and her husband Peter; a niece, Nicole; and two nephews, Peter and John. He was preceded in death by his parents, John M. Sr. and Anna Rock Vuksic. Friends were received at McDonald-Linn Funeral Home, Avalon. Funeral services were held in St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Allison Park, on Saturday.

Jacob Paul Finley, 31, from Emsworth, was arrested April 28 after officers obtained an arrest warrant for theft of a vehicle, receiving stolen property, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

On May 5, James Douglas Dahl, 45, from Lawrence, PA was arrested for DUI following reports of driving erratically on Route 65. Vehicle was pulled over near Hazelwood Ave in Emsworth after officers viewed the vehicle hit the curb three times.

Pauline Klasterka Pauline R. Yankovic Klasterka, 88, of Ross Township, wife of the late Frank E. Klasterka, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2011. She is survived by two children, Joane Lapsley and her husband David and Frank L. Klasterka and his wife Lisa; her sister, Anna Marie Zacharias; three grandchildren, Bill Lapsley, Frank and Katelyn Klasterka; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Rosemary Miller and Eleanor Hirsch.

PennDOT District 11 is announcing work to replace the bridge that carries Route 65 (Ohio River Boulevard) over Lowries Run between Hiland Avenue and Camp Horne Road in the Borough of Emsworth, Allegheny County, has concluded for this year’s construction season. Single lane traffic restrictions on Route 65 were lifted today, Friday, Dec. 3.

The restrictions were removed shortly before noon. Route 65 is now fully reopened to two lanes in each direction in this area.

Emsworth officials were informed Wednesday that the Herron Avenue Bridge has deteriorated to the point that it must be closed immediately.

The bridge crosses Lowries Run from Western Avenue to what is primarily a commercial/industrial area that includes Schaffner Manufacturing, and carries heavy truck traffic.

A recent inspection by engineers for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) revealed that support beams had rusted through, according to Emsworth Council member Paul Getz.

Emsworth Mayor Dee Quinn welcomes new borough council member Alexander Nalevanko after he was sworn in during Wednesday’s council meeting. Nalevanko, his wife and three children reside on Courtney Street, and moved to Emsworth six years ago. He is a teacher with the North Hills School District.

Nalevanko was chosen from among three applicants for the seat left vacant by the resignation of Amy Adams. he was appointed in a 4-2 vote, with David Heflin and Dan Lenz supporting applicant Kevin Yurkovich.

Sidionia Hellerman Sidionia C. Roose Hellerman, 89, of Avalon, wife of the late Allen A. Hellerman, died Tuesday, April 13, 2010. She is survived by three children, Edward P. Hellerman and his wife Marcia, Marie E. Griffin and her husband Harry and Allen B. Hellerman and his wife Barbara; her brother, Richard Roose; 10 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four siblings, Benjamin, John and Joseph Roose and Margaret Bordt.

Emsworth Council now will fund the borough’s portion of the 2010 Avonworth Community Park bud-get after a park official explained bonuses given to two employees.

Emsworth is just one of five municipalities that help fund the park with tax dollars. The others are Ben Avon, Ben Avon Heights, Kilbuck and Ohio Township.

Copper tubing was reported stolen in the burglary of a South Fremont Avenue home reported Jan. 13.

Albert Meiser, 23, of Ross Township, was arrested for the burglary of a Brighton Road business on Jan. 16.

A vehicle on South Harrison Avenue was reported vandalized Jan. 12.

John Holzapfel, 44, of Greenwood Avenue, Emsworth, was arrested Jan. 15 during a traffic stop. He was charged with aggravated assault, resisting arrest, driving under the influence and motor vehicle code violations.

Police say a small amount of cash and a PlayStation were stolen from the Center Avenue home.
