Emsworth Council chose from among two candidates to fill a vacant seat, with Mayor Dee Quinn casting the deciding vote.

Both Carolyn Galante and Jason Helfrich were nominated for the seat left vacant due to last month’s resignation of council member Dan Lenz. Both also had their supporters, with Galante receiving votes from council members Alex Nalevanko and Brian Fashian, and Helfrich being backed by Paul Getz and Kevin Yurkovich. Council members Tom Maletick and Ken Kroen were absent.

Quinn was called on to break the tie, and cast her vote for Helfrich.

Barely 24 hours after Bellevue Council appointed a new third ward representative, Emsworth Council accepted the resignation of one of their own.

Lynn Tennant Heffley was chosen in a unanimous vote by Bellevue Council Tuesday to fill the third ward council seat left vacant when Mark Panichella resigned after two years on council.

A lifelong resident of Bellevue who lives on North Jackson Avenue, Heffley is a teacher at Bellevue Elementary School.

An Emsworth official has been arrested by Ohio Township Police for the second time so far this year.

Council member Dan Lenz -- arrested earlier this year after a violent domestic at his Camp Horne Road home -- was taken into custody for driving under the influence early Saturday morning.

Police say that Lenz drove off the side of Camp Horne Road, nearly striking a fire hydrant, and then proceeded the wrong way up an I-279 off-ramp. He refused to submit to a blood test and also refused to sign bail forms, and was taken to the Allegheny County Jail.

Emsworth will potentially add another step to the snow removal crew call-out procedure after a lengthy discussion by council at its regular meeting on Wednesday.

Although the borough’s street crew takes care of the plowing and salting during the day, a group of eight people are employed for nighttime call-outs. Currently, Ohio Township Police determine when the streets need treatment, and notify the Allegheny County emergency dispatch center to contact the crew.

A member of Emsworth Council was charged with felony aggravated assault after police were called to his home on Jan. 28.

to the criminal complaint filed by Ohio Township Police, Dan Lenz, 55, of Camp Horne Road, hit his wife in the head with a flashlight, causing a severe laceration that required her to be transported to the hospital.

Lenz was arraigned at night court, charged with aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person and harassment.

Emsworth now has a resolution setting a pay scale for public works employees, but that doesn’t mean either of the borough’s two part-time DPW workers will be getting a raise right away.

The resolution adopted by council at its meeting Wednesday sets a pay range for the DPW, from $15 to $24 per hour. It also allows the employees to be reimbursed by the borough for up to $200 per month for health insurance they purchase themselves, and up to $300 per year for clothing.

A vacancy now exists on Emsworth Council.

Council voted at its regular meeting Wednesday to accept the resignation of member David Heflin. Heflin did not give colleagues a reason for his resignation, and declined to comment when contacted later.

Council member Dan Lenz voted against accepting Heflin’s resignation. Council member Paul Getz was absent.

Emsworth also is looking for a new member of the vacancy board, which sometimes is used to fill council seats, after Andrew Potoski resigned his seat on the board.

Chief search A police officer who lives in Avalon told borough officials Tuesday not to look too far from home for a new police chief.

With current Chief Robert Howie set to retire this year, council hired a consultant to conduct a search and recommend candidates for his replacement.

Former longtime borough solicitor Mike Marmo, now a judge on the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas, swore in newly-elected mayor Dee Quinn, incumbent council members Amy Adams and Paul Getz, and new members Dan Lenz and Kenneth Kroen.

The new council’s first act was to keep the status quo for the president of council.
