Although it was a good week of basketball for the Avonworth boys’ team in terms of wins, that was offset by the team's fourth consecutive section loss when they hosted Freedom this past Tuesday.

The'Lopes, who led to start the fourth quarter, went scoreless for a good bit of the final six minutes on their way to a disappointing 66-61 loss.

"I don't think it was anything they [Freedom] did. We missed a lot of lay-ups and our foul shooting wasn't good again," said coach Dan Bradley.

It could be a game that Avonworth can look back on as a jump starter for things to come when the Antelopes hosted Aliquippa this past Tuesday.

The 'Lopes, who led from start to finish and had built a 14-point lead by the beginning of the second quarter, weathered a steady comeback by a stubborn Quips team to pick up their first section win of the season 63-57.

"We handled their press okay. We worked on it and we did a lot better than we have over the last couple of nights," said coach Dan Bradley.

After falling in the championship game of the Avonworth Tip-off Tournament last weekend, the Antelope basketball team aimed to bounce back when they hosted Cornell this past Tuesday.

Missed shots and an accumulation of turnovers inhibited their chances, however, and they were defeated by the Raiders 62-49.

"Our biggest concern right now is making lay-ups and finishing," said second year coach Dan Bradley. "We missed a bunch of lay-ups and foul shots," he said.

The Avonworth boys’ basketball team ended a tumultuous season last week, adding three more games to the loss column.

On Friday, Feb. 12, the Antelopes hosted Quaker Valley, and for the most part made a game of it, but eventually fell 47-31.

Avonworth, who lost at in the Quakers’ building a month ago by 34 points, stayed within striking distance until Quaker Valley was able to stretch their lead at the end from the free throw line.

The Avonworth boys' basketball team has struggled this year so far, posting a record of 2-10 overall and 1-4 in section play.

The 'Lopes now have lost three in a row since their last win on Jan. 6, against Monaca, where they won 73-52.

Head coach Dan Bradley attributes the team's troubles to poor foul shooting and not finishing in the offensive end.

Someone once said that familiarity breeds contempt. Well, in the case of Avonworth athletics, familiarity seems to breed winning seasons and playoff runs, and hopes are high the practice will be as successful for the boys’ basketball team as it was for the football program.
