Northgate keeps cuts in proposed final budget

After hearing from those opposed to some of the cuts made to balance the Northgate School District’s 2011-12 budget, the board voted Monday to propose a spending plan with no tax increase, and no funding for full-day kindergarten, a spring musical, or several teaching positions.

About 15 students concerned about the reduction of funding for the high school musical told the board that the musical taught them the value of hard work, was a lot of fun, brought the students closer, let students express themselves, and improved the students' singing and acting abilities.

Exercise equipment

Highmark has donated $9,994 to purchase two treadmills and an elliptical machine for Northgate High School. " They will be positioned so that all physical education classes can benefit from them," said principal Bryan Kyle at Monday's school board committee of the whole meeting.

The older equipment that was donated about 15 years ago will be discarded, officials said.

"Pink-out"

When the Northgate and Avonworth football teams meet on the field for the final football game of the season, they will be waging war against more than each other. The game will be a "pink-out" to raise funds and enhance awareness of how breast cancer impacts young women.

Arthur thinks that Northgate High School principal Bryan Kyle has THE best secretary in the whole world, and he is considering going back to school just so he can be spoiled by his new friend Dana Bloom.

Volleyball players recognized

Northgate girls’ volleyball team members Erica Benny (center) and Amanda Silay (right) along with coach Stephanie Francis were recognized by the Northgate School Board and athletic director/principal Bryan Kyle at the board’s meeting Monday evening. Both girls were named to the first team all conference, while Benny also was named to the all-WPIAL third team for the second consecutive year. The board also recognized the girls’ cross country team and individual runner Bridgit Walters for their performance during the WPIAL and PIAA championships.

Softball co-op?

Girls at Northgate's middle school may be able to play softball this spring.

Northgate School Board athletic committee chairman David Natale said that athletic director Bryan Kyle was discussing with Avonworth the possibility of middle school softball, already in place at the neighboring school district, becoming a co-op sport.
