The Northgate Flames (6-7, 3-2) played host to the Avonworth Antelopes (8-6, 2-4) Tuesday night, and in what turned out to be a classic battle between rivals, the Flames fell to the 'Lopes in overtime, by the score of 75 - 64.

Northgate came into the game intent on extending their win streak to three, after beating New Brighton and Westinghouse last week. However, Avonworth had their own intentions, and with their pesky man-to-man defense, the 'Lopes gave Northgate a taste of their own medicine. And, Avonworth handed the Flames their first loss at home this season.

After what could be classified as a successful start to the young basketball season, the Avonworth Antelopes found themselves at a respectable 3-3 record, and with section play in full swing, the boys looked poised for a possible playoff push.

However, over the holiday break, they took their .500 record to a tournament hosted by Carlynton and in the first game took on the Rams of South Side Beaver, whom they found no trouble beating 70-61. Junior Ryan Pearson led the team in points with 22, while senior Brian Vales added another 15.

In a quarterfinal game that went down to the wire, the Avonworth football team saw their season come to a close as they were defeated by the Rochester Rams last Friday, 26-22.

"We gave it a good run," said coach Duke Johncour after the game."We came out of the chute slow with a fumble and giving up a couple of big third down conversions, but they made some great plays when they had to and that was the end result." .

For the fourth consecutive year, the Avonworth Antelopes football team is headed to the WPIAL quarterfinals. The ‘Lopes defeated California at home last Friday, 28-16.

Led by Ricky Lawniczak's three rushing touchdowns, the Antelopes broke open a close game in the second half and took advantage of a couple of Trojan turnovers that were converted for scores. They will now meet Rochester at Ambridge High School tonight at 7:30 p.m.

"I'm happy we're moving on," said head coach Duke Johncour after the game.

The Northgate Flames and the Avonworth Antelopes scrapped for 48 minutes last Friday night at Northgate's Alumni Stadium. The Flames were defeated 28-20, in a scenario similar to last week's game, but again one characteristic stood out most -- Northgate's unwillingness to give up and their desire to keep fighting.

It was just another day at the office for the Avonworth Antelopes when they hosted Our Lady Of Sacred Heart on senior recognition night last Friday.

The Antelopes (7-1), led by Ricky Lawniczak's 166 yards rushing, earned a WPIAL playoff spot by defeating the Chargers 35-10.

Give a lot of credit to the offensive line, which totally dominated the line of scrimmage.

"They blocked well. “We hit the holes hard and we ran very well," said head coach Duke Johncour after the game.

In a non-conference game that seemed destined for the loss column last Friday, the Avonworth Antelopes got their act together in the nick of time and pulled out an exciting win in overtime.

Facing the Beth Center Bulldogs, who were coming into the game at 6-0 and ranked No. 4 in Class A, the Antelopes overcame four turnovers, along with nine penalties to score two touchdowns in the fourth quarter that tied the game before pulling out a 20-19 win in overtime.

Playing through a steady rain on a field that was reduced to a mud pit, the Avonworth Antelopes recorded their second consecutive shut-out when they traveled to Riverview last Saturday.

What was really remarkable was that the Antelopes were able to hang on to the ball under the circumstances while forcing five turnovers by the Raiders on their way to a 26-0 victory.

"We weren't able to throw the ball as much as we would have liked to, but you have to roll with the punches," said head coach Duke Johncour after the game. He added, "Ricky [Lawniczak] ran the ball well."

It was just a matter of time until the Avonworth football team put it all together, and that time arrived last Friday when the Antelopes hosted the Wilkins-burg Tigers.

With an offense that was led by Ricky Lawniczak, who rushed for 101 yards and 3 TDs in the first half, and a defense that constantly harassed the Tigers while recording six sacks, the Antelopes rolled to a 38-14 victory.

"We set the tone early and made the plays that we needed to make," said head coach Duke Johncour. "We put some pressure on them, and it worked out well for us."

With a little help from their opponent, the Avonworth football team picked up a hard fought victory in Springdale last Friday.

Scoring on their first possession and maintaining a 7-0 lead into the fourth quarter, the Antelopes surrendered a touchdown late but earned their first win of the season when the Dynamos missed on the extra point try for a 7-6 victory.

"It was a physical game," said head coach Duke Johncour.

"Our hats off to Springdale, they played hard and they're physical, but we did what we had to do to win the football game."

Just like last year, the Avonworth football team opened the season against Bishop Canevin, and the results were no different as the Antelopes fell to the Crusaders at home 33-6.

Untimely turnovers again proved to be the ‘Lopes downfall as new head coach Duke Johncour will have to wait another week for a chance to secure his first win.

"We moved the ball up and down the field, but the turnovers kill you," said Johncour.

The Antelope offense was led by tailback Ricky Lawniczak, who rushed for 154 yards on 17 carries.

With the 2011 football season about to get underway, new Avonworth head coach Duke Johncour seems optimistic about taking over a program that has done a complete turnaround over the last several years.

Gone is former head coach Jason Kekseo, who compiled a 31-6 record over the last three seasons that included two conference titles and two appearances in the WPIAL semis.

"The program was established and that's a good thing," said Johncour.

"I'm coming into a very good situation. The kids are working hard, but we have a lot of holes to fill," he added.

The ‘Lopes entered the final week of the regular season in control of their own destiny, as far as playoff dreams are concerned. With three games remaining, each contest would be crucial to take, and every player knew that winning-out ensured a spot in the WPIAL playoffs, from which the team has been one year removed. Losing more than once would close the season on a team that had enjoyed so many moments of promise.

It's been one heck of a week for the Avonworth baseball team, one that saw the Antelopes pick up three wins and improve their overall record to 4-2 and 4-1 in the section .

The highlight of the week came on Thursday, April 14, when senior Nick Hobbs, pitching in his first ever start, threw a no-hitter in a section game at home against Elderton while registering 10 strike-outs.

After the game, coach Phil Coffin said, "It's the first time all year and we've been working with him since he was a sophomore. He was able to come around with his curve ball."

Having a tough time reaching any consistency on offense, the Avonworth baseball team found themselves on the short end of a 9-5 loss when they hosted Vincentian in their section opener last Thursday.

The Antelopes registered five hits, which made it difficult, especially after falling behind early in the game.

Pitcher Frank Restelli held the Royals in check through the first two innings, but had some control issues in the top of the third.

Vincentian took advantage of four walks that were issued, along with two base hits, to claim an early 4-0 lead.

The Northgate Flames honored their seniors last Friday night by downing the ‘Lopes from Avonworth for the second time this season. The Flames and the Antelopes battled hard in what turned out to be another hard fought rivalry game.

The Flames jumped on top early, as senior guard Matt Garrison knocked down a 3-point shot to get the Flames off and running. Northgate took advantage of their inside game by working the ball in to Josh Douglass and Jon Girvin, and outscored Avonworth 17-9 in the first quarter

It was a tough week of basketball for the Avonworth Antelopes, a week that involved teams heading in the opposite direction as the regular season winds down.

On Tuesday, Feb. 1, the 'Lopes hosted Quaker Valley, a Top 10 team and the section's second place team, and were defeated 75-33. The following day the Antelopes hosted Beaver Falls, another Top 10 team and the section leader, and were defeated 83-61.

It could be a game that Avonworth can look back on as a jump starter for things to come when the Antelopes hosted Aliquippa this past Tuesday.

The 'Lopes, who led from start to finish and had built a 14-point lead by the beginning of the second quarter, weathered a steady comeback by a stubborn Quips team to pick up their first section win of the season 63-57.

"We handled their press okay. We worked on it and we did a lot better than we have over the last couple of nights," said coach Dan Bradley.

It all boils down to execution. That was the key when Avonworth squared off with Rochester in a WPIAL semifinal game played at Ambridge high school last Friday.

The Rams, who will move on to play Clairton in the finals at Heinz Field this Saturday, managed to convert several third down and long situations on pivotal drives on their way to defeating the Antelopes 20-7.

"We didn't execute," said head coach Jason Kekseo. "We put a solid game plan together. There were a few breakdowns, but hats off to Rochester -- they're a very good, well-coached football team."

It wasn't pretty, nonetheless the Avonworth Antelopes did what they need to do in their quarterfinal match-up against North Catholic last Friday.

The 'Lopes for the most part had trouble finding their rythym on offense, but took advantage of several turnovers by the Trojans on their way to a 17-3 win.

North Catholic came into this match-up without starting quarterback Martin Long, who had been sidelined with a broken fibula and has missed the playoffs.

Avonworth was hampered by penalties, as they were assessed nine for 105 yards.

A number of Avonworth football players have been named to the Eastern All-Conference Team.

Three players made the first team: on offense, Ricky Lawniczak; and on defense, Conor O’Donnell and Eddie Kurtz. Kurtz also was named “Defensive Player of the Year.”

Named to the second team were Brian Vales, Bryan Bartram, Andrew Niklaus and Elliot Miller on offense, and A.J. Mang on defense.

Receiving honorable mentions were: Ryan Schmid, Scott Barlek and Derick Ott on offense, and Michael Giampole and Jake Szolis on defense.

The Avonworth Antelopes football team renewed their rivalry with the Northgate Flames Friday night, and boy have things changed. The 'Lopes were defeated 32-7 in 2002 and 27-6 the last time the two teams got together in 2003. Last Friday, the Antelopes were in total command as they disposed of the Flames 35-0.

"We knew we would take care of them," said coach Jason Kekseo after the game. "You have a rivalry game like this -- it's usually the tougher team that wins. Tonight I think you see how far Avonworth's program has come."

Totally mismatched. That's the best way to sum up the game when Avonworth traveled to Robert Morris University to play Our Lady of Sacred Heart last Saturday.

The Antelopes, 7-1 and a good bet to at least claim a share of the Eastern Conference title, scored on seven of nine of their offensive possessions on their way to defeating the winless Chargers, who are in their maiden season, 54-6.

It was hard to tell what might happen in the beginning of the game especially after the Antelopes turned the ball over with a fumble on the game's opening possession.
