It was a game that illustrated total dominance when the Avonworth Antelopes hosted Leechburg last Friday.

Led by Ricky Lawniczak, who rushed for 101 yards and scored three touchdowns -- all in the first half -- the 'Lopes cruised to victory over the Blue Devils 54-0.

“Ricky is such a downhill runner," coach Jason Kekseo said after the game. "Our offensive line started taking it personally and they got fired up. Once the offensive line starts rolling -- it all starts up front," Kekseo said.

It was suppose to be a tough match when Avonworth hosted Riverview on the Antelopes’ homecoming night last Friday.

For the third consecutive game, however, the Antelopes kept their opponent off the scoreboard as they disposed of the Raiders 35-0.

The win puts the 4-1 'Lopes in a tie with Springdale atop the Eastern Conference, with Canevin and North Catholic close behind at 3-1, with one less conference game played.

"We have a team with good, strong character," head coach Jason Kekseo said after the win last week.

Almost every girl has that ballerina dream. The lights, the tights, the music, the Prince Char-ming.

But then come the practice -- hours of practice -- along with ankle sprains and instructors' demands and so often that dream becomes a memory, along with Barbies and other childhood interests.

Amy Herchenroether, the daughter of Wendy and Dan Herchenroether of Ben Avon, probably experienced all of those stages in her dance training, but since starting "…about when I was 3," her love of dance has grown with her skills, and at age 17, the dedication is beginning to pay off.

The Avonworth School Board is expected to vote Monday on whether to eliminate wrestling from the district’s cooperative sports agreement with Northgate, as recommended by the Avonworth board’s athletic committee.

The committee has proposed eliminating not only wrestling, but the ninth grade boys’ basketball program as well.

The Avonworth School Board is expected to vote Monday on a proposed 2010-11 budget that will increase the property tax millage rate by six-tenths of one mill.

The $22,381,375 spending plan will require a transfer from the district’s reserve fund of about $766,000, according to Avonworth director of finance Brad Waters, which will put the fund balance at 8 percent of the district’s operating budget.

The Avonworth-Northgate wrestling program is the latest target of school officials looking for ways to trim their budgets.

Wrestling is one of four cooperative sports programs shared by the two local school districts because neither has enough students to support its own teams. The other sports, for which the districts split the costs evenly, are golf, swimming and track.

A recent meeting of administrators from both districts produced what Avonworth superintendent Dr. Valerie McDonald termed a "collaborative agreement" to eliminate wrestling for a number of reasons.

Is the school tax increase justified?

What I would like to know as a taxpayer is, did the school boards of Avonworth and Northgate look at all options before taking the easy way out and try to raise taxes?

What happens later this year when the gaming revenue gets handed out? They are not going to lower taxes.

So I guess before we just raise taxes the school boards should look at all options and make sure not to gouge the taxpayers. Between sewer rate increases, higher school taxes, and new county assessments, when will the taxpayers catch a break?
