The Emsworth Fire Department’s rescue truck was just one of a variety of vehicles featured at the “Touch a Truck” event sponsored by Avalon Public Library last Saturday on California Avenue. Pictured here, 11-year-old Jacob Burns of Bellevue gets to experience sitting behind the wheel of the emergency vehicle. The avenue was lined with vehicles ranging from police cars to hearses and dump trucks. The event also featured a scavenger hunt and other activities for children, and fund-raisers for the library.

Saturday was all about kids in Avalon, as the Avalon Public Library sponsored its annual “Touch a Truck” event. The afternoon is both entertaining and educational for children, who get up close to a variety of service and emergency vehicles. And for those kids tired of touching a truck, there were games where they could touch a...duck and win a prize.

Avalon Public Library’s “Touch-A-Truck” event will be held Saturday, Sept. 17, noon - 4 p.m. on California Avenue in front of the Avalon borough building.

Touch-A-Truck is a family-friendly event that allows children and guests to see, touch and learn about a variety of vehicles and how they operate and service their community.

The event also will include refreshments, games, bake sale and basket raffle.

On April 26 at 6:30 p.m., the Tuesday night book group will discuss “What Was Lost” by Catherine O’Flynn.

The Friends of the Avalon Public Library will meet on April 28 at 7 p.m. New members are welcome.

The Saturday Matinee movie on April 30 will star Colin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter and Geoffrey Rush. Movie times are 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The board of trustees will meet in the library conference room at 7 p.m. on May 3.

On May 4 at 10 a.m. Wise Walk will be held. Walkers should meet at the YMCA Senior Center inside the Church of the Epiphany.

Dec. 21, special pajama story time, 6:30 p.m. Children can wear P.J.s, bring a stuffed friend, sing songs, listen to stories, make a craft and have a snack.

Dec. 24, the library will close at 3 p.m.

Several events are planned at Avalon Public Library this month.

There will be a fund-raising committee meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 12, at 7 p.m.

The library has started a new knitting/crochet/needlework group. It is an informal gathering in the front reading room on the first and third Tuesdays of every month from 6 to 7:45 p.m.

The movie “Ghost Writer” will be shown on Oct. 23 at 10 a..m. and 1 p.m.

There will be a Halloween party for children on Oct. 29 from 6 to 7 p.m.

Avalon Council has formally approved the permanent appointment of a new director for Avalon Public Library.

Interim director Rania Sullivan was named to the position.

On Thursday, Aug. 26, at 7 p.m., the Avalon Public Library will hold a free concert on the grass. The group "High Society" will play tunes from the 1920s, '30s and '40s.

There will be a Tuesday Evening Book Club meeting on Aug. 31, 6:30 p.m. The book "Strange but True" by John Searles will be discussed.

On Sept. 9 at 7 p.m., there will be a library fund-raising meeting.

The Saturday Mystery Book Group will meet on Sept. 11, 2:30 p.m. The September selection is "206 Bones" by Kathy Reichs.

Avalon Council voted unanimously at its July 20 meeting to close California Avenue in front of the borough building on Sept. 18 for an event to benefit the Avalon Public Library.

The library will hold a "Touch a Truck" event in which children can interact with emergency vehicles. It will be held from noon to 4 p.m. The library will sell books and food to raise money.

Council voted to close the street from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Council members Dave Dixon and Vicki Donnelly were absent.

Ruth Pattini Ruth Fischer Pattini of Bellevue, wife of the late Arthur S. Pattini, died Friday, Feb. 19, 2010. She is survived by four children, Arthur E. Pattini and his wife Nancy, Thomas H. Pattini, Joanne R. Geubtner and her husband David and William P. Pattini and his wife Mary Ann; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Friends were received at O'Brien Funeral Home, North Side, where services were held on Monday. Memorials are suggested to Avalon Public Library, South Home Avenue, Avalon, PA 15202.

The Avalon Public Library will hold "Chess Club Day" on Thursday, Feb. 4, at 6:30 p.m.

The event is for people of all ages, with skill levels from beginner through advanced.

Students interested in an after-school chess club will be able to register at the event.

The fair will help expand the children's book collection at the library, which receives free books for every purchase made.
