The Avalon Police Department’s war on drugs -- and drug dealers -- continued last weekend as officers conducted surveillance and netted 30 stamp bags of heroin and one suspected drug dealer.

Police say they observed a drug transaction at the corner of Orchard and Cleveland avenues on Saturday, Dec. 4. Layton Burks, 21, of Florence Avenue, was charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession with intent to deliver, delivery of 10 stamp bags of heroin, resisting arrest and possession of a small amount of marijuana. He was taken to the Allegheny County Jail.

On Wednesday, Aug. 4, Avalon Library will host “Summer Swing,” a free concert on the grass.

“High Society” will play tunes from the 1920-40s.

Art created by summer students will be on display Aug. 6-11.

Avalon Library will host local author Maureen Frew on June 22 at 6:30 p.m.

Frew will read her book "Today's the Day! My New Shoes" for children ages 4-9.

Avalon Library is selling raffle tickets for a “Gardening Basket.” The raffle will be held at the Apple Blossom Festival on May 8, when the library also will hold a book and bake sale in front of the borough building from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

The event will include songs, stories, crafts and pictures with the Easter Bunny.

Avalon Elementary parking Borough officials and Avalon PTO members have come up with a plan to help ease parking problems created when parents drop-off and pick-up their child-ren at school.

A resolution approved by Avalon Council at its Aug. 18 meeting will allow parents to purchase a parking permit that will let them park in front of the school, between North School Street and North Chestnut Street, from 7:30 until 8:30 a.m. and from 2:30 until 4 p.m. on weekdays.

The Avalon Library summer reading program will wrap up on Saturday, Aug. 1, with a performance by the Capezutti Giant Rabbit Puppets.

The puppets will appear at noon during the library's end-of-summer beach party. Young readers should wear their shades and flip flops and bring a towel to wave at the rabbits.

This will be the final opportunity for readers to register for prizes. There will be a special awards ceremony for all summer readers.
