Pool Benefit

A spaghetti dinner to raise funds for the Avalon swimming pool will be held Saturday, April 28, 3 -6 p.m. at the Avalon Fire Hall, 629 New Brighton Rd. Price is $8 for adults; children 2-12 $5; No charge for younger children.

The colors of summer

Visitors to Avalon swimming pool next summer will be able to enjoy this recently finished mural on one of the buildings, the creation of artist Krystal Waldschmidt, pictured here with her work. A Northgate graduate who now attends Carlow College, Krystal also painted a mural at the South Birmingham Avenue park in Avalon, and worked on the one that can be seen at Allegheny General Hospital - Suburban Campus.

Chemical spill contained when tanker flips

It could have been much worse, but the combination of an effective emergency response plan and what can only be called acts of God prevented an environmental nightmare when a tanker truck carrying a toxic chemical overturned on Union Avenue Wednesday afternoon.

The tanker was traveling down Union Avenue toward the North Boroughs about 3 p.m. when the driver attempted to turn onto the I-279 southbound on-ramp. Officials believe several tires hit a rut beside the ramp, the driver overcompensated, and the tanker flipped.
