Believing that Christmas can still change the world, Emsworth United Presbyterian Church has partnered with the Advent Conspiracy to celebrate the holiday by spending less, giving more, worshiping fully and loving all during this special season.

Reverend Susan M. Rothenberg, pastor of the church, said that the partnership provides the congregation with the opportunity to purchase alternative gifts to benefit non-profit groups that answer Christ's call "…to seek His presence in the 'least of these,' as urged in Matthew 25:40."

Community garden benefits local food pantries

A plot of ground a little under one-third of an acre located at the eastern end of Bellevue may not qualify as urban gardening, but planted carefully, a garden that size will yield an abundance of produce for the North Hills Community Outreach [NHCO] food pantries.

It's not the first time that this mini-farm has been cultivated. Terrie Amelio, whose family gardened the Davis Avenue property many years ago, donated the land to NHCO, requesting that the land be used as an organic garden and that the produce support NHCO's food pantries in Bellevue and Hampton.

Imagine, if you can, not getting a gas bill in the winter that reaches triple figures. Imagine a summer without sky-high electric bills.

Imagine if your home actually generated as much energy as it consumed.

Experts say that the technology exists to do just that. The challenge is building a home that is affordable and esthetically pleasing at the same time.

The next challenge is doing it in a place that does not have a lot of sun, but does have very cold winters and very hot summers.

Free home repairs available to residents

For the second consecutive year, North Hills Community Outreach is partnering with Christ Lutheran Church in Millvale to provide minor home repairs to qualified seniors and adults with physical disabilities.

Applications are now being accepted for repair projects that will be completed by supervised groups of youth between June 28 and July 2.

Senior citizens or adults with physical disabilities who wish to be considered for home repairs should:
