QVCOG Recycling Day to be held in Avalon

The Quaker Valley Council of Governments will hold its annual Recycling Day on Saturday, May 8, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Residents of Aleppo, Avalon, Bell Acres, Bellevue, Ben Avon, Edgeworth, Glenfield, Haysville, Kilbuck, Leet, Leetsdale, Glen Osborne and Sewickley can drop off a number of recyclable items at the Avalon street department, Frederick Street at New Brighton Road. Proof of residency (driver’s license or voter registration) is required. No commercial establishments may participate.

Among the items that will be accepted are oil in a container, lead/acid batteries from cars, motorcycles and boats, and passenger and light truck tires. There is a $2 charge per tire. No large road tires or off-road tires will be accepted.

Computer and electronic equipment that will be accepted at a fee includes: computer system (CPU, monitor, keyboard, mouse), $15; televisions, monitors and LCD monitors, price based on size, $10 - $50; printers, scanners, fax machines, UPS single battery, analog telephone systems/components, stereo or boom box, pair of large speakers, DVD, VCR, T-vo, cable box, DVR and small appliances such as can openers and toasters, $5.

Reusable building materials also will be accepted: cabinets; plumbing fixtures; windows (no broken glass, no aluminum storm windows); doors (no broken glass and no rotted or split wood); useable latex paint, $1 per can fee; concrete blocks; glass blocks; bricks; lumber (no individual pieces shorter than 4 feet, no areas rotted or stained with oil, grease or dirt); tiles; hardware; hardwood flooring; counter tops; insulation; shingles and siding; light fixtures; carpet (no worn or stained areas).

Unacceptable materials include old and out of code electrical products, appliances, items with exposed lead paint, items that are missing major parts (such as cabinets without the doors), and asbestos siding and tiles.
