Bellevue to hold Health and Safety Day Saturday

Event Date: Sat, 2010-09-25

Bellevue Borough's "Health and Safety Day" will be held at Bayne Park on Saturday, Sept. 25, from noon until 4 p.m., with a variety of activities and informational booths.

Emergency and law enforcement personnel will host a number of demonstrations and activities:

People will be able to experience driving under the influence with the DUI simulator.

Bellevue Police officers will inspect bicycles for safety and Allegheny General Hospital's Department of Emergency Medicine will fit children for a free bicycle helmet.

People also can register to have their child car seats inspected by a certified expert. Anyone registering will be eligible to win a free car seat.

Free gun locks will be part of information available about gun safety.

The Life Flight helicopter will land in Bayne Park at noon, and the crew will be available to answer questions about what they do. NorthWest EMS also will be present with rescue equipment and perform demonstrations.

Bellevue Police Department will officially kick off a "Neighborhood Watch" campaign so residents can form their own community groups.

Information on consumer protection, identity theft and cyber security will be provided by the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General.

Home fire safety tips will be available from the Bellevue Fire Department, which also will display their trucks and equipment. There will be a fire simulator for children to practice their own fire fighting techniques, and "Sparky the Fire Dog," a remote-controlled fire vehicle, will visit. The West Penn Burn Center will teach people of all ages how to avoid burns.

A special program will be conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). As part of the National Take Back Initiative, people can drop off expired, unwanted or unused pharmaceutical controlled substances and other medications with no questions asked. The drugs will be destroyed by law enforcement officers.

People with questions about their medications can visit the Allegheny General Pharmacy Department for help organizing their medicines and information on possible drug interactions, including those involving herbal supplements.

Weather safety will be discussed by weatherman Dennis Bowman at 11 a.m. in Bayne Library. He will explain dangerous weather conditions and operate a tornado simulator.

Other health-related programs and activities sponsored by Allegheny General Hospital will include stroke risk assessment and information on the new urgent care center at Suburban Campus. Welcome bags and free t-shirts will be handed out by the hospital, who also will have physical therapists on hand to inspect walkers and canes for safety and recommend height adjustments and do balance screenings.

The interactive "Glitterbug" program will demonstrate the importance of hand-washing by using a special light to show children what really is on their hands.

Children from toddlers to teenagers can win prizes as they test their knowledge of sports trivia and safety. Prizes also will be awarded for timed agility tests.

Parents with questions about pediatric orthopedic and sports safety questions can "Ask the Doctor" from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

"H2O -- The Nutritional Secrete Weapon" will be the topic of a program held at 2 p.m. in the library.

Throughout the event, the Bellevue Volunteer Fire Company will be selling refreshments, with all proceeds benefitting the fire company.
