Summer fun

There’s no season quite as fun as summer, you have to admit, and you don’t have to travel far to have a great time.

It was standing room only at Avalon Field for the annual North Boroughs Independence Day fireworks. Pyrotechnico promised us lots of "oohs" and "aahs," and that's exactly what they delivered. Unfortunately there was a slight problem getting the CD to work, so the fireworks went up without musical accompaniment. We'll try that again next year!

Being part of the committee that plans this event is one of the more rewarding community service projects I've encountered, at least in terms of fun. This year's committee also included Ed Klicker, Cindy Phelps and Lee Nelson, which proves that a small group of people can accomplish great things.

Big thanks also go to all of the North Boroughs municipalities for their contributions of money and volunteers, and to the many private companies and citizens who donated.

On July 4th, Bellevue hosted a picnic and free swimming at Memorial Park. I unfortunately missed this event because I had to pay one last visit to the AGH-Suburban Campus emergency room after I lost a battle with a piece of flagstone. On the upside, the injury gave me an opportunity to buy Scooby-Doo band-aids, which Arthur found amusing.

There are still lots of fun summer events in the North Boroughs as we move into carnival and festival season. The Ohio Township Volunteer Fire Company's annual carnival is next weekend, and it's a wonderful place to meet up with friends and neighbors you haven't seen in a while. Bellevue's annual Sidewalk Sales Days will kick off this coming Thursday, with the 5K Run/ Walk scheduled for bright and early on Saturday.

Keep an eye on the pages of The Citizen for other fun activities this summer, and don't forget to take The Citizen with you when you find your fun on vacation around the world!
