Write-in winners named

Although the Allegheny County elections department continues to tabulate write-in votes from the May 17 primary election, elections officials have confirmed the winners of nominations for the Avonworth School Board and Emsworth Council.

The nearly 1,900 write-in votes cast for Avonworth School Board resulted in a slate of candidates comprised primarily of write-in candidates to upset an opposing slate that appeared on both the Democratic and Republican ballots.

When the polls opened on May 17, the ballot included incumbent board member David Oberdick and newcomer Jeffrey Carraway cross-filed, and incumbent Brenda Barlek on the Democratic ballot only. Five candidates on an opposing slate also were cross-filed.

On the Democratic ticket, incumbent Peter McKay and former board member Rob Wible received 348 and 363 votes, respectively, allowing them to join Barlek, Oberdick and Carraway on the general election ticket for the Dems.

Barlek joined McKay and Wible as a write-in candidate on the GOP ticket. She received 351 votes, with Wible picking up 376 and McKay getting 370. Those numbers were enough to lock up the Republican nominations along with Oberdick and Carraway.

While write-in votes eliminated a fall contest for the five Avonworth School Board seats, they created a contest for three four-year seats on Emsworth Council. Alex Nalevanko, George Rossi and Kevin Yurkovich were listed on the Democratic ballot and won that party’s nomination. Republican write-in votes, however, went to Nalevanko, Yurkovich and Brian Fashian. Fashian had fallen short on the Democratic ticket. The November ballot will now feature four candidates for three seats: Nalevanko, Yurkovich, Rossi and Fashian.

Write-in results for other towns are not yet available.
